Especially after this week's blizzard, you and your family might be hoping for an early end to winter. Ironically, the Groundhog Day Extravaganza in Topsfield scheduled for this weekend has been canceled due to the winter weather conditions. However, kids can search for signs of other animals at Fun With Animal Footprints and Signs in Natick or explore the sculpture park and exhibits at ARTfull Explorations at the deCordova in Lincoln. If you're not ready for winter to end just yet, the annual Snow Festival in Boston offers tons of fun activities in the snow.

Some great events going on indoors this weekend include the Big Family Quiz Thing and a free Play Date at the ICA, featuring the museum's annual children's film festival. In performances this weekend, families have their pick between Stuart Little, Gustafer Yellowgold's Show (pictured), Sleeping Beauty, and more local favorites.

Winter seemed to settle in for good this week, and I bet I'm not the only person looking forward to Groundhog Day and perhaps the possibility of an early spring.  We have rounded up some celebrations of our furry friend happening around the state this weekend. It's going to be a snowy Super Bowl weekend with lots of cool options for NYC families who aren't into watching the game. (We're Puppy Bowl fans in our house!) Enjoy multicultural fun at the Korea Society's New Year's celebration, the Children's Museum of Manhattan's Japanese storytelling fest and the annual Thunderbird American Indian Dancers Annual Dance Concert and Pow-wow at the Theater for the New City.

After spending some time snowed in, it’s safe to say both kids and parents alike are ready to get out of the house! Bundle up the troops and take part in some of the great events NJ has to offer this weekend as we bid farewell to January and welcome the month of February. Think we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter? There is something incredibly New England about skating on a frozen pond. And refreshing. And exhilarating. And magical. Yet, important questions always lurk in the back of our minds. Who has checked the thickness of the ice? Is the surface free of debris? Ultimately, is it safe? Luckily, at Winding Trails in Farmington, 6 miles from Hartford, you can have the best of both worlds: an old-fashioned pond skate in a setting that is well-maintained and tested for safety.The pond is open daily for skating once staff has determined that the ice is at least 6 inches thick (skating itself is unsupervised), and the ice is resurfaced on a regular basis. While you’re there, scope out the gigantic hill (on our sledding hills worth driving to list) and trails for snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing for your next winter escapade.

My kids are gamers. I'll admit it, they cherish every second they can get on their Xbox, computer or iPad. Like most moms, I try to limit their screen time, but I've also come to realize that gaming is a big part of how they socialize with their friends. Recent studies have even shown that moderate gaming leads to improved performance in perception, attention and cognition. During these cold winter months, it's nice to find an indoor space where my kids and their friends can get together and play (that isn't my house).
