This weekend, Disney rolls out an action-packed sci-fi adventure for older kids that reminds us that there's a whole lot more to the Mouse House than princesses and singing snowmen. Tomorrowland is a glorious thrill ride for tweens, teens, and the adults who take them places. It is not a movie for little ones by any stretch of the imagination—not because of anything inappropriate (the film is rated PG), but because the breakneck pace of both the complicated plot and the relentless threat of peril is likely to leave anyone younger than 10 curled up in a ball begging for explanation. But for older kids? Pure gold. Tomorrowland has all of the action and humor of an Indiana Jones flick, the sci-fi impact of Star Wars or Doctor Who, and the feel-good, inspirational message of vintage Walt Disney—all with some heart-pumping George Clooney charisma and a pair of ass-kicking young girls thrown in. Memorial Day is one of the most heartfelt holidays we celebrate in the United States. It's the perfect time to teach our children that it is important to honor those who lost their lives while serving our country. Attending a local Memorial Day parade is an enjoyable and educational way for families to show their support and respect for these fallen heroes. Each year in Litchfield County, my boys race to collect shells that have dropped to the ground from the Memorial Day remembrance shots fired into the sky. Of course, the free ice cream and lemonade are a welcome bonus. So while you enjoy the long weekend, take some time out to remember the brave men and women who fought for us at one of these Litchfield County Memorial Day parades.

What a week of awesome events we've got marking the unofficial start of summer—Memorial Day weekend. From NYC beaches and Governors Island opening, to popular Fleet Week ship tours, there's lots of entertainment to be had for families.

Take advantage of the three-day weekend with a day trip to Allaire State Park in New Jersey. Pack a picnic and enjoy hiking, biking, a visit to the park's historic village and a ride on the working steam train. Or head out to the Hamptons, where you can soak up the rays on beautiful beaches, or learn about oyster farming, along with other family-friendly fun. Kids can also enjoy demos of 18th-century horsemanship, open-fire cooking and musket firing at the Revolutionary War Encampment in Connecticut. For an enchanted evening, take a stroll through Lightscapes, a garden fantasy in Westchester. The art and light experience features illuminated, larger-than-life flora and fantasy creatures made out of recycled materials.

Beginning in May, the New York City Department of Transportation is sponsoring its sixth season of Weekend Walks, fun neighborhood gatherings that take place right in the middle of New York City streets. These aren't vendor-packed street fairs, massive festivals or the bike-filled Summer Streets; instead, they're casual community celebrations where local businesses, organizations and residents come together to dance, make art, eat, party and play in closed-to-traffic streets.

Activities vary by location, but Weekend Walks usually include live music, arts and crafts, classes and workshops, and kids' programming hosted by cultural institutions and businesses along the route. Since these events are low-key and neighborhood specific, it's probably not worth traveling a long distance to attend one. However, since there will be more than 60 different Weekend Walks throughout the five boroughs between May and September, there very well may be one near you.

I'm going to confess—and date myself—right up front: I grew up on The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman (how she resisted him was beyond me), and that inspired a fascination with Ojai, CA, birthplace of the super-70s superheroes. And while there isn't really a sign welcoming visitors to the "home of astronaut Steve Austin" as TV once led me to believe, everything else this charming town had going for it 40 years ago still holds true today, from irresistible cafés to horseback rides in the hills. Ojai is SoCal at its best; it's where vegans and cowboys make a chillaxing home together.
