This Week: More Great Family Getaways, Best NYC Boat Cruises, NYC Pool Guide, Kids' Classes in Williamsburg

My husband and I have been spending the summer indulging our kid and ourselves—who do you think finished off that massive chocolate cocktail in front of her? And even though break is halfway over, we're trying to be glass-half-full people by remembering that there's still a month of indulgences ahead of us. If you're looking to get out of the city, our Travel site's got lists of the best things to do with kids in Martha's Vineyard and Falmouth on Cape Cod, plus a roundup of fantastic last-minute family travel deals to places like Atlantic City, PA's Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, and even Jamaica.

Prefer a getaway closer to home? How about spending a day in Long Beach, Long Island or hit Tomahawk Lake Water Park, Point Pleasant Beach, the Keansburg Amusement Park or other fun-filled destinations in New Jersey.

Of course you don't need to leave NYC to go on an adventure. We just rounded up our favorite New York Harbor boat rides and our Summer Fun Guide is filled with great local outings like City Island, Randall's Island and Governors Island—your kids won't believe they're still in NYC.

Here's what else we shared this week on our NYC site.

Long Island Kids' Activities August 4 and 5: How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular and Caillou

There are lots of good kids' shows in town this weekend, like How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular at Nassau Coliseum and Caillou and the Doodlebops at NYCB Theatre at Westbury. There's also a great Ice Cream Social in Southhold and a Country Fair in Shelter Island. Check out our events calendar for more fun things to do with your family this weekend or whenever.

Free and Fun Things to Do This Weekend for CT Kids: Corn Festivals, Honey Harvests, Sunflowers and Art Celebrations

The back to school sales are in full swing and act as a reminder that the start of the new school year is less than one month away. Every June I make a mental list of all of the fun things I want to do with my kids over the summer. I'm happy to say that we've done a lot, but with only a few weeks left before they're back in school I want to make the most of our time together. We have more than enough ideas to help your family create summer memories together in our list of 120 Things to do With Kids in Connecticut and our post about Water Fun in Fairfield County.

What Latch on NYC Could Mean to You

Beginning September 3, 2012, 40 New York City private and public hospitals will join Mayor Bloomberg's Latch on NYC, an initiative that encourages new mothers to breastfeed their babies.

As part of this program, many hospitals will cease giving out promotional materials and free samples from formula manufacturers, and stop supplementing breastfeeding infants unless medically indicated. In fact, formula will be distributed exclusively by nurses in the hospital, just like any prescription medication, and any mother asking for a bottle will be informed about the benefits of breastfeeding before getting one.

Fun and Free Things to Do in Boston with Kids: Circle the City, Salem Maritime Festival, and More - August 4-5

Arts festivals, maritime festivals, world festivals - the weekend offers more outdoor celebrations (most free!) in and around Boston than there is time to enjoy. Whether its the Massachusetts Marketplace Festival in Wellesley, the Salem Maritime Festival in Salem, One World Day at the Franklin Park Zoo or Family Day at Newburyport’s Yankee Homecoming Day, families have plenty to choose from.

We’ve also added to our series of day trips and family getaways: a boat ride on the Concord River; 40 things to do on Martha’s Vineyard; and top things to do on the lower Cape.

For indoor things to do, the Highland Street Foundation’s Free Fun Friday series continues with free admission at the MFA this Friday. Be sure to check Tara’s tips for visiting before you go.

Enjoy!

Fun & Free Events for LA Kids this Weekend: Mars, Pixar, and Boobie-Palooza: August 4- 5

This week, inspired by events happening a great distance away, Mommy Poppins is striving for excellence. We aspire to greatness, to be at the pinnacle of our field, to earn for ourselves a spot in the record books. What has gotten us so fired up? Simply this: at 10:31pm on Sunday evening, the Curiosity Rover lands on Mars, marking yet another giant leap for our esteemed space program. (We are lucky to have two places locally where we can gather to watch the landing, Planetfest and the Griffith Observatory).

And oh yes, the Olympics. There is that, too. Inspired by that little sporting affair across the pond, we want to give our kids every opportunity to shine. Whether you dream of seeing your child on that gold medal platform, or are just hoping to get him to dunk his head underwater, we can point you to the classes to achieve your goal. We’ve got roundups of the best swimming, fencing, gymnastics, ice skating (it’ll be winter before you know it!) and yoga classes around.  (Yoga’s not in the Olympics? Are you sure? How about dance? Not that either? Um… sewing?) No matter; whatever their sport, they’re all winners in our eyes.

The events this weekend are all winners too: keep reading for our favorite picks …

Free & Fun Things to Do This Weekend for NYC Kids: Hong Kong Dragon Boat Fest, Jam on Dumbo, Summer Streets August 4-5

It's the first weekend of August and while some New Yorkers are leaving the city for far-flung destinations, we're planning a fun-filled staycation for the rest of the summer. This weekend brings FREE annual favorites like the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Queens' Flushing Meadows Corona Park and the first installment of Manhattan's car-free Summer Streets.

There are also some fabulous FREE kids' concerts like Rolie Polie Guacamole in Bryant Park and Jam on Dumbo's Family Music Festival. Plus your family can go all retro with a disco and roller-skating party at the Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope.

All of our best bets for the weekend are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Summer Fun Guide, which is jam-packed with info on the best NYC beaches, pools, water playgrounds and other ways to cool off.

Whooping Cough Cases Up in NYC

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is on the rise all over the U.S., even in New York City. (Guess that explains why NY1 has seemingly played that whooping cough PSA on a loop for the last month.) Incidents in NYC have gone up 300 percent and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that this may be the worst season for it in half a century.
