Best NYC Kids' Concerts for Winter 2013: Rockin' Live Music Shows

Earlier this week, we shared our favorite NYC spots where kids can run around (or skate or swim or bike) indoors when it's too cold to play outside. But sometimes the best way for the entire family to get their sillies out is to jump around at a live music show. My daughter and I love discovering bands and musicians together, and we're always on the lookout for new-to-us groups to add to our ever-growing list of favorites.

There are so many cool kids' concert series in New York City—Bring Your Own Kid at 92YTribeca, Just Kidding at Symphony Space, the Tot Music Fest at Littlefield, to name a few—that you could easily see three shows every week (as my daughter would like to do)! But to give your dancing shoes (and your wallet) a break, we've rounded up our top 11 family concerts this winter. In addition to picks at all of the major series, we're also highlighting two local kindie rock faves who are playing the BAMkids Film Festival as well as a couple of totally free shows. In fact, almost all of these concerts cost less than $15 per person.

News: Disney Store Redux, $20 Theater Tickets, A New Old-Style Soda Fountain, Doodle 4 Google Contest

In our last news roundup, we told you about three different theater ticket deals, including two-for-one tickets for Broadway and off Broadway shows. Well we have the scoop on another off Broadway ticket deal–just $20 per person—plus news about two popular children's theater troupes that have been in limbo. In non-theater news, we've got cooking classes for children with special needs, a new old soda fountain in Midtown East, a fresh look for the Disney Store in Queens and an audition opportunity for moms who want to be in the spotlight.

Indoor Play for NYC Kids: Places to Burn Off Energy Inside this Winter

Every winter, New York City families are faced with the same problem: How to keep the kids active when it's too cold to play outside. While your kids would probably be happy to turn your bed into a trampoline and your shelves into a jungle gym, you're desperate for better ideas. Our Indoor Activity Guide is filled with mellow inside spots like public atriums, children's bookshops and fun-filled megastores. But when your kids really want to burn off energy, you need a more active indoor destination where they can play, run around and test their limits, not your patience.

That's why we came up with this list of indoor play places in NYC where kids can get their ya-yas out. We even found spots that cater to tweens and teens. Plus, all of these places offer drop-in sessions so you don't have to commit to a class or pricey membership. From ball pits to drop-in play gyms, ice-skating to swimming to NYC's only inside skatepark, here are great ways to keep kids of all ages moving indoors in New York City.

Martin Luther King Day Celebrations This Weekend in Fairfield County, CT

I”ve always thought it somewhat ironic that our kids celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by taking a day off from learning.  But alas, Congress has once again failed to consult me when composing the list of federal holidays, and so school is indeed closed on Monday.  Therefore, come Monday morning, this family will honor Dr. King by happily lounging in our jammies and eating pancakes.   Not only that, we’re hoping to check out some of these great area events this MLK Jr. weekend! Just in case you are in Harford County check out these MLK events there too.
