Looking for the best things to do in Boston this weekend? Here are some family-friendly events and activities in the area to add to your list for this weekend.

Ready to hop aboard the Polar Express? We've found options for you on Cape Cod, in Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Kids will love these magical train rides featuring hot chocolate and of course, Santa! After you've told all your Christmas wishes to the man in red, spend a day of kindness with the Grinch and Cindy Lou in Easton. Jingle Jam returns to Grace Chapel in Watertown. This free festival features, games, live music, tasty treats and more. Finally, in Brookline, the "Hanukkats" are going on a Hanukkah adventure to recover missing dreidel letters!

With all the expenses of the season piling up at once, it's a bonus when parents find free holiday and Christmas events in Boston for kids. Here are our picks for the best events near Boston celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year's without needing to dig into your wallet (except maybe to take out your T pass). Hop aboard the Mayor's Enchanted Trolley for a tour throughout Boston neighborhoods or take in a festival with live music in Watertown. Get hot cocoa with Mrs. Claus in North Andover; and as a bonus, get a picture with Santa. The Annual Menorah Lighting will take place in the Boston Common, Seaport, and South End.  And, of course, everyone will love ringing in the New Year in the heart of Boston.

While Boston families may favor different holiday traditions, everyone can rejoice in the magic of holiday lights. And boy, has the magic of Christmas lights returned in style. The Festival of Trees at Elm Bank lights up the trees in Wellesley. Winterlights brightens the skies over Gloucester, Rockport, and Essex. Even the animals are taking part in the festivities at Stone Zoo in Stoneham and the Southwick Zoo in Mendon.

Enjoy this season and the magic of lights with your family at one of these holiday light shows (maybe even bring a cup of cocoa for the road).
