Mostly Free and Fun Things to do in CT with Kids This Weekend August 16-17: SoNo Arts, Dragon Boats, Tennis, and More!

We returned from our summer getaway this weekend, and even though our traveling spirits were buoyed by these 10 Cool Car Games, we were happy to come home to so many fabulous local activities - including this weekend's SoNo Arts Celebration. We've got our list of 120 Things to Do with Kids in Connecticut Before They Grow Up to inspire us, too (we still haven't seen the Rock Cats play)!

Our suggestions for things to do this weekend are below. You can find additional activities in our Event Calendar, and our guides to CT Beaches and Water Fun and CT Summer Fun. Our CT Go List of activities is a monthly round up to help you plan ahead for the rest of the month.

Have fun!

And for those of you staying out on the East End, be sure to check out CMEE's Summer Concert Series every Tuesday this month. Mommy Poppins' Hamptons and North Fork Family Guide is a proud sponsor and we'll be on hand each week with a new prize to give away! This week: Suzi Shelton (prize TBD).

Weekend Fun for NYC Kids: Free Coney Island Sand Sculpting Contest, SummerStage Harlem Family Day, Marvel Live! August 16-17

There are less than three weeks of summer break left, so get out there and hit a NYC public pool or beach, or plan a day trip to an out-of-town shore. The attraction-filled Coney Island should be extra-fun on Saturday thanks to its annual Sand Sculpting Contest, one of our top family event picks of the month. Other best bets include the final installment of Summer Streets, SummerStage Harlem Family Day, and a magical Potions & Planting party in Chelsea.

Have you entered our SUMMER OF PLAY CHALLENGE yet? This week is literally your last chance as we'll be awarding our grand prize on Friday: Everything you need to throw the Ultimate Summer of Play Bash. So share your family's playtime pics on social media using the hashtags #summerofplay and #playmatters and you just might be our big winner.

All of our weekend picks are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Summer Fun Guide. Before heading out on your adventures, be sure to download our FREE Mommy Poppins Kids on the Go app so you can find the best family destinations wherever you happen to be in NYC.

Back to School Shopping on Long Island

Don't shoot the messenger! The back to school ads and fliers have long-since hit your mailbox before we even mentioned it. Nevertheless, the kiddies are returning to school in a few short weeks and you want to get the shopping for all of the new fashion trends, gear and supplies over with. Instead of hitting the big box stores, why not try shopping at a few local spots? It's a great way to support small businesses on Long Island and still get everything you need for September.

And for other back to school inspiration, be sure to check out our After School Programs, Classes & Activities Guide for Long Island Kids.
