Finding a babysitter on New Year’s Eve is harder than getting your one year old to eat spaghetti without getting it in her hair. And harder than getting your eight year old to clean her room. (Well, maybe it’s not quite that hard…)

When Foxwoods approached me to come to their casino resort I was initially skeptical. A casino, really? Once I heard more about the family friendly events and activities they provided I was intrigued. What the heck? It could be a fun adventure! So my son and I invited his friend and little brother and we were off for a night away at Foxwoods in South East CT. As we pulled up to Foxwoods Pequot (pee-qwat) Tower the boys were oohing and aahing. “This is like Disney World!” they exclaimed as we approached the very large, nicely designed hotel complex. We pulled up to the complementary valet and had a very friendly valet take our car. The lobby is grand and impressive and check in was quick and easy. The boys were thoroughly into it. We entered our lovely modern room to find it nicely appointed with 2 queen beds. We immediately put on our suits and found the pool at the spa. It’s open for kids from 7am – 6pm. We got there at 5:15 so happily had 45 minutes before they politely asked us to leave for “adult swim”.

Some aspects may be too scary for kids four and under, but older kids are likely to be delighted with this enchanting tale. Even though Christmas Day has come and gone, the holiday season is still in full swing in NYC and beyond. Merry Christmas Long Island Families! This weekend, head to the Long Island Children's Museum for a family concert featuring Ben Rudnick & Friends, and celebrate Kwanzaa through hands on activities. Two classics hit the screen at the Cinema Arts Centre. Follow the tale of Clara, who is given a nutcracker doll for Christmas, and enjoy Meet Me In St. Louis, a musical starring Judy Garland. The Children's Museum of the East End has plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. Learn how to design and sew, make ice cream in a baggie, and create circus shaped waffles. Hopefully we all enjoyed a very merry Christmas and the little ones are happily playing with their new toys and gadgets while parents exhale a sigh of relief that the shopping is done. Now we look to the new year and all 2014 has to offer us. We still have one weekend left in 2013 and there are plenty of ways to enjoy it around Westchester this weekend.
This is the last weekend to take in the Holiday on the Hill Model Train Show at Lasdon Park. Also this weekend, Mr. Dickens tells a Christmas Carol at Lyndhurst Castle and the Paper Bag Players are at it again, entertaining kids with Hiccup Help! at Emelin Theatre.
Boys and girls high school basketball players are competing in a Slam Dunk Tournament at the Westchester County Center all weekend long and the Jacob Burns Film Center is playing A Muppet Christmas Carol (a must-see for my kids each Christmas). The White Plains Public Library is hosting a puppet show of Jack in the Beanstalk or get creative and make a Kwanzaa craft at Field Library in Peekskill.

Christmas is behind us and we're all looking forward to the New Year. But first, this weekend brings some great seasonal celebrations like the American Museum of Natural History's annual Kwanzaa festival, frosty fun at the Bronx Zoo's Wildlife Ice Carving Week, hands-on holiday projects at the New York Hall of Science's ReMake the Holidays and seal watching at Orchard Beach.
With the season quickly drawing to a close, make sure you set aside some time to experience all of the holiday fun New York City has to offer, from amazing Christmas lights to department store holiday windows to cool displays to twinkling Christmas trees.
