It’s mid August, and our calendar features a full slate of summer festivals in and around Boston this weekend, from the Boston GreenFest on City Hall Plaza to the Fisherman’s Feast in the North End and the West End Children’s Festival; from Verrill Farm’s Corn and Tomato Festival in Concord to the Marshfield Fair and the Gloucester Waterfront Festival. I don't know how it happened. Once we were united, a single people.  But the divide between us has started to grow. We are now two factions staring each other down through the hole in the schoolyard fence. On the outside chewing gum and wearing flip flops we have Still Loving the Summer.  Sitting at their desks with hands folded neatly in their laps are the Back in School bunch. Still Loving the Summer stays out past sundown, catching movies and concerts under the stars. Back in School is trying to learn a trade and wondering if Superhero Shakespeare counts for extra credit.

But there's hope. We can still find common ground. Everyone can agree on some things, like, no one likes jury duty, right?  And on a more positive note, everyone loves birthday cake. Right?  See, despite our differences, underneath we're really the same! We're one big happy family again, even if some of us can still sleep in.

These gorgeous (though fall-like) temperatures are a reminder that we've only got a few more weeks before back to school madness begins. Even so, there's lots of summer fun still to be had in Westchester, both indoors and out!

If you're looking for a good show, Oliver! and Into the Woods are playing this weekend. The East Coast National Baseball Card Show is going on now through Sunday, for all you baseball fans. On Friday, you can check out Mamaroneck Shares Summer Block Party, which we mentioned earlier this summer, or check out Annie at Hudson River Museum's new amphitheater. Saturday, head to Hudson Highland's Nature Museum for Fascinating Fossils. On Sunday, walk the gangplank to the Science Barge in Yonkers for their Art & Science series or check out a 50's doo-wop concert in Yorktown. And don't forget, the New York Renaissance Faire continues this weekend.

There are less than three weeks to frolic at NYC beaches before they close for the season, and this weekend is a particularly good time to go. Coney Island is hosting its annual Sand Sculpting Contest on Saturday and Staten Island's Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk is throwing its two-day Back to the Beach bash, complete with fireworks on Saturday night.

Other outdoor family fun this weekend includes Riverside Park South's annual kite festival FlyNYC 2013, the final installment of Manhattan's activity-filled Summer Streets and the old-fashioned Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island, where you'll also find the wonderful vintage carnival Fête Paradiso.

This weekend, head over to Michael J. Tully Park for the Italian Festival, which boasts rides, games, and live music. In Huntington Village, local artisans show off their wares at the Heritage Crafts Fair. In the mood for a show, or two? The Frog Prince hits the stage in this musical production at Theatre Three. Little Orphan Annie, everyone's favorite curly-haired, red headed girl takes center stage at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts. Also on tap: Back To School Day at the Stony Brook Post Office, and Ocean Science Sunday: Water Fest at The Whaling Museum and Education Center of Cold Spring Harbor. Although the days are still filled with sunshine, playground and pool time, there’s no denying the fact that the school year is on the horizon. Why not combine some end of summer fun with a little educational twist that will get everybody back in the learning mode? Check out the cool Retro Science Egg Drop at Liberty Science Center, create Paleo Art at Field Station: Dinosaurs or learn about animals and their environments at the Whittemore Wildlife Sanctuary’s Tales & Trails program. I remember when my son was first learning to add numbers. He was so proud of himself. His face lit up as he proclaimed proudly, "2 + 2 is 4!" But soon the equations and concepts became more complicated. He was forced to do daily flashcard drills and endless worksheets, and I saw his initial enthusiasm start to fade. That's when I decided to turn math time into playtime with fun and engaging board games.

While there are plenty of math apps he can play alone and hands-on activities at the Museum of Mathematics, board games help him learn new mathematical concepts or master old ones in a supportive and entertaining environment. Family game night is a great bonding experience, too, and it certainly doesn't feel like work.
