It's our day, Moms! Hang out with the ones that you love, relax or perhaps spend the weekend on the baseball and soccer field like some moms we know (me). For those of you that are getting out and about this weekend you'll have lots to choose from: there are National Train Day events, a free Mother's Day concert or some kiddie rock by Justin Roberts, and even a Dragon Dance at Turtle Back Zoo.  And you can find a listing of all NJ activities for kids in our Event Calendar.

It's Mother's Day weekend and we wish every mother in the universe loads of love, peace and compassion this Sunday, May 13th. If you plan to celebrate the day there are plenty of Mother's Day activities, events and places to brunch in our Fairfield County and Hartford County posts. In Litchfield we love to celebrate by heading out to the Mayflower Inn, the Winvian or Community Table for a nice meal and beautiful atmosphere. Pricey, but well worth the splurge. We've also listed even more events happening for Mother's day in our events calendar so be sure to check that out too. For Mother's Day we wanted to give our readers some extra love so we have a giveaway currently running. Happy Mother’s Day!

We’re all about Mother’s Day in Boston this week, with a full calendar of special events that kids and families can do together. From the Watch City Festival that runs Saturday and Sunday, the Spring Open House at the Blue Hill Observatory and concert with Karen K on Saturday to Lilac Sunday and the Duckling Day Parade on Sunday, families can find plenty of things to do. We continue our month-long focus on Chelsea with a look at the neighborhood's best places to play indoors and take kids' classes.

Although Chelsea is filled with wonderful parks and playground like the elevated High Line and community hub Seal Park, it's also home to large number of indoor romping spots. From drop-in play spaces to members-only kid gyms, the Rubin Museum of Art's Education Center to theater, art and cooking programs, here are 17 places for kids to play and learn in Chelsea.

Nassau County Museum of Art

Next up in our museums series is the Nassau County Museum of Art, an ideal setting for introducing children to art—a gift they may well cherish for a lifetime. While the exhibit space is very manageable, meaning it will not be too overwhelming or exhausting for young visitors, there's enough to see and do here to keep you coming back for more. In addition to the interior space in the Gregorian mansion, there's a sculpture garden that visitors can enjoy, with the works of Tom Otterness and Fernando Botero. Or relax in the formal gardens with their soothing patterns and shapes, or hike through one of the many well-marked trails along the 145-acre preserve. If there's one message to be gained from a visit here, it's that art takes many forms, from sculpture and architecture to nature, and at the Nassau County Museum of Art, one can see and experience it all in one place.

Free National Train Day Celebration in Grand Central Terminal on Saturday

Yesterday, we shared some of our favorite train museums and other places for little choo-choo lovers in and near NYC. But hold on to your conductor hats: Today we've got details on a big bash in honor of National Train Day. This Saturday, May 12, families can head to New York City's most famous and fabulous station, Grand Central Terminal, to mark the 143rd anniversary of the creation of the nation's first transcontinental railroad with exhibits, hands-on activities and interactive displays. If your kid's into trains, you'll want to chug on by to this totally FREE event.

Creatures of Light: Nature's Bioluminescence: Incredible Glow-in-the-Dark Displays at the American Museum of Natural History

My seven-year-old son is a big fan of exotic sea creatures, particularly the anglerfish which uses a glowing ball of bacteria to lure its prey to their doom. This creepy looking aquatic killer is one of the many amazing lifeforms spotlighted in Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence at one of my kid's favorite places, the American Museum of Natural History, so I knew it would be a hit.

The exhibit explores how the anglerfish and other creatures make their own light, also known as bioluminescence, but it also touches on fluorescent beings which emit absorbed light and others that let little glowing critters hitch a ride to light the way. Creatures of Light features firefly-lit meadows, otherworldly caves that twinkle like Christmas trees and shallow bays flashing with light. Although a handful of land creatures are included, the exhibit mainly focuses on fish and other ocean dwellers since the majority of them create their own light. They are all quite a sight!
