This Week: Summer Camp Deals, Free Outdoor Summer Music Festivals, Field Station: Dinosaurs

With June starting this weekend, summer camp is on all of our minds. Not only did we put together a diverse list of quality programs that still have availability, we also launched our annual summer camp sale. Save up to 65% on 15 different programs, all vetted by Mommy Poppins moms.

Drop-in summer fun is also on the agenda. On the NYC site, we rounded up 30 festivals and fairs in June, free outdoor music and culture series and reviewed the brand-new, open-air attraction Field Station: Dinosaurs just across the Hudson River.

Our other sites are focusing on summer fun, too. Connecticut shared 25 free and cheap things to do in Fairfield County this summer and Boston rounded up 25 things to do in Springfield, Massachusetts this season. And over in New Jersey, we spotlighted the family-friendly beaches of the Jersey Shore.

Chelsea Shopping for NYC Kids: Toy Stores, Children's Boutiques and Bookshops

[UPDATED: December 1, 2012]

For our final post about visiting Chelsea with kids, we're taking a look at family shopping in the area. While there are a lot of popular chain stores on Sixth and Seventh Avenues like T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and infant emporium Buy Buy Baby, you'll find homey children's toy and clothing boutiques on the side streets filled with eclectic wears and playthings, and in one case a perpetually busy train table. Chelsea is also home to one of New York City's best bookstores for kids, Books of Wonder, which hosts free storytimes and author readings every single week. Here are our top stores for families in Chelsea, NYC.

This Week: Memorial Day Weekend Means Beaches, Governors Island and Dinosaurs; Plus Strawberry Picking and Free Summer Sports

Looks like it's going to be a monster of a holiday! The Memorial Day weekend is the main event on all of our sites. Lots of summer attractions open for the season this Saturday, including beaches, Governors Island and tri-state area amusement parks, including Victorian Gardens in Central Park.

There are some big openings outside NYC as well. Right across the Hudson in Secaucus, New Jersey, Field Station: Dinosaurs is poised to make a roar with more than 30 animatronic dino robots. Interestingly, Boston's Franklin Park Zoo is opening a similar prehistoric wonderland Zoorassic Park this holiday weekend, in case you're looking for a last-minute getaway. Other great day or weekend trips include strawberry picking at farms on Long Island, in New Jersey and Connecticut, and hitting a suburban beach. You can find even more inspiration on our Travel site.

Of course Memorial Day weekend marks summer's unofficial start. If you haven't figured out summer camp yet, you're in luck: We're running deals on a bunch of NYC summer camps. What you see is just a preview, so be sure to check back next week for additional deals.

Summer for NYC Kids: Our Guide Has the Best Free and Fun Things to Do All Season Long

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. The beaches open, the sprinklers turn on (assuming it's over 85 degrees), Governors Island begins welcoming visitors and kids start having trouble focusing in school. (Funny, we have the same problem with work.)

In anticipation of a wonderful season full of fun and free activities and cool destinations, we've updated our Summer Fun Guide. Highlights include:

This Week: New Park Slope Playground, Kid-Friendly Chelsea Restaurants, It's My Park Day

We were all about cool new destinations and attractions this week. Cooper-Hewitt opened its brand-new Design Center in Harlem, where kids can take free art workshops. After a one-year renovation, Park Slope's J. J. Byrne Playground reopened with state-of-the-art equipment and a Colonial theme. And the Metropolitan Museum of Art debuted an out-of-this-world rooftop installation.

If you're looking for a fun Memorial Day weekend getaway, how about going fruit or vegetable picking? We've updated our pick-your-own guide with roundups of fruit and vegetable farms on Long Island and berry picking spots in Connecticut. Meanwhile our Travel site can help you plan your big summer vacation. We have new posts about things to do with kids in Virginia Beach and a rave review of Disney's new cruise ship, the Fantasy.

This Week: Mother's Day Weekend, Yoga Birthday Party Giveaway, Strawberry Picking Near NYC

Mother's Day is the main event on all of our sites, from New York City to Los Angeles. Moms, if you have Sunday all planned out, good for you. (Extra points if your family did all the work.) However, if you're still trying to decide how to celebrate in NYC, we've got lots of great suggestions, plus a roundup of our readers' favorite Mother's Day brunch spots.

In other news, strawberry picking season is in full swing and we've got roundups of family-friendly strawberry picking farms and festivals in Long Island and New Jersey. Another great excuse for a day trip: Outdoor festivals. We've got a list of a few fabulous spring festivals in Connecticut. Meanwhile, our Travel site has a beautiful Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort slide show. If your family still hasn't bought you a Mother's Day gift a vacation there would certainly make a good one.

This Week: May Festivals and Street Fairs, Focus on Chelsea, Star Wars Fun for NYC Kids

No, the kids in the picture aren't caught in a net. They're playing in the new Ernesto Neto exhibit down in Chelsea, one of the cool things we posted about this week. Speaking of Chelsea, we'll be exploring this super-family-friendly area throughout May and we kicked off our coverage with our top 50 things to do with kids in the neighborhood. We also rounded up the best outdoor festivals and street fairs going on throughout the month, and we profiled the Queens County Farm Museum, one of 40 historic NYC sites vying for grants from Partners in Preservation. You can help pick the winners by voting for your favorite spot on our Facebook page.

Outside NYC, our New Jersey site has lists of the best family-friendly biking routes and hiking trails in case you're looking for an active day trip. Our Boston site has suggestions for easy-to-make homemade Mother's Day gifts. And our Travel site has a review of the Malibu Dude Ranch in Milford, Pennsylvania.

This Week: Mother's Day Brunch Picks, Awesome New Museum Exhibits, Amazing Weekend Events

At the risk of sounding like one of those organized moms who always plans ahead (something I'm rarely accused of), I'm happy to share our picks for Mother's Day brunch spots in NYC a full two and a half weeks before the big day. We actually have our readers to thank for the awesome choices, so check it out and see if your favorite restaurant made the cut (and if not, add it in the comments).

We continued our spring culture coverage with a roundup of the best new museum exhibits for families and we wrote about two of our favorite free seasonal events happening this weekend: East Harlem's Street Games and the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair.

Our sister sites are also buzzing about the best things to do and see this season. New Jersey has a roundup of cool exhibits for kids this spring and Connecticut has a list of amazing outdoor festivals in case you're looking for a fun day trip. Further afield, our Los Angeles site shared a very thoughtful post about things to do during Screen Free Week, and why a total technology tune out isn't necessarily beneficial for our kids. If you're looking for an exotic family vacation destination, we've got an enticing slide show of Avignon, France or the slightly less exotic, but cool Cleveland on our Travel site.
