Two years ago, we discovered Portraitbug and its adorable photo sessions, which inspired us to offer a great deal on Easter portraits. It was hugely popular—I even went with my family. The photos we got from that shoot are some of the best I have of my kids, both the ones with the chicks and without.

While Portraitbug has closed, most of the staff has moved to Big Apple Portraits, which offers the same great quality and value just a few blocks away. So I'm thrilled to partner with Big Apple Portraits this year to offer Live Baby Chicks Portrait Sessions at our upcoming Mommy Poppins special event.

There’s plenty going on this weekend for families in the Boston area, including the Boston Inventgenuity Festival on Saturday and Sunday. Kids can enjoy great music, too, with favorites like Ben Rudnick, Little Groove, and Vanessa Trien all performing this weekend. Early March means maple sugaring time, and one of the first special sugaring events happens at the Middlesex Fells. Read on for details about these and other great events happening this weekend. There is no greater star in the children’s literary world than Dr. Seuss (aka Theodor Geisel). His March 2 birthday is honored as National Read Across America Day, and his stories are being read all around town. So grab your well-worn copy of Cat in the Hat and get ready for a wild weekend. Oh the places you'll go... unless you need to take the 405, because they're doing that shut-down-the-freeway thing again (with a cute "keep two lanes open to create false hope" twist).

This is also a big weekend for whales (who are lucky because the 405 closure doesn't affect them). The gentle giants are feted in celebrations at Dana Point and Palos Verdes, and might even get a shout-out at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium's anniversary fest.

Also apparently unaffected by the 405 is February, because it done hightailed it outta here, which means it's time for our March Go List! One big recommendation this month is Cavalla: Odysseo (read our review of opening night)!

It's Read Across America weekend! You'll find celebrations at libraries and elsewhere all over the Island. Also check out the celebrations at the Long Island Children's Museum and Maritime Explorium. Calling all chocolate lovers!  The Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City is hosting the annual Chocolate World Expo where you can sample and purchase chocolates, baked goods, gelato, specialty foods, and more from more than 50 local and regional vendors. Advance tickets are strongly suggested. If your kids love playing with and collecting trains, they'll especially enjoy the St. James Model Railroad Club Winter Train Display at the Mills Pond House in St. James. Also on tap: a concert by Aesops Bops with the Yak Yak Band with David Gonzalez at the Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington, and a Purim carnival at the Friedberg JCC.  As always, check out our events calendar every day for fun activities for the family!

The first weekend of March is jam-packed with exceptional family fun in NYC, like the kickoff of the month-long New York International Children's Film Festival and the annual Kids Food Festival in Bryant Park. There are also some wonderful multicultural celebrations, including a pair of St. Patrick's Day parades in Queens and the JCC in Manhattan's big Purim carnival. Looking to rock out? There are some cool kiddie concerts, too, like Brooklyn Kids Rock featuring four local bands, Boston singer/songwriter Alastair Moock at 92YTribeca and the Deedle Deedle Dees at Symphony Space.

Disney's epic adventure Oz: The Great and Powerful hits theaters next Friday, March 8 and I don't think I've been this excited about a family movie since the relaunch of The Muppets back in 2011. My daughter and I are both counting down the days until we can see this Wizard of Oz prequel, which focuses on the Kansas-born Wizard's journey to Oz, where he tangles with three stunning witches, including my kid's favorite, Glinda (that's her in the photo, dressed up as the original Good Witch for Halloween a few years back).

The warmer days and freezing night temperatures in late February and early March make for perfect maple sugaring conditions.  Over the past few years I've taken my family to many different farms in Connecticut to watch the process of tapping trees and turning sap into syrup.  While each place we've visited shares a different perspective on making syrup, one thing remains the same - my family's favorite part is always the tasting. Festivals throughout the state this weekend offer an opportunity for families to learn more about the sugaring process.

Although this week is starting to feel like spring, we all know how predictably unpredictable New England weather is – and that winter isn’t over yet. The vernal equinox is March 20, but I remember years when we had snow in April. So, you may want to keep the boots and snow pants somewhere handy for now, and enjoy the remaining days of winter with your kids.
