Many parents recognize the value of being a “team player,” but what if your kid’s team isn’t on the soccer field or in the swimming pool? What if he prefers singing to soccer? Writing to running? Maybe her team is more creative or curious than competitive. Westchester colleges welcome these teens and pre-teens with summer and after-school enrichment programs that let these artistic or scientific individualists come together with like-minded peers.

Kids are known for bringing home a suitcase-sized amount of artwork each month. Pottery, however, seems to stand apart from the coloring pages and fingerpaints, perhaps because of its sheer durability. We’ve rounded up some of the places in Westchester and Rockland that offer paint-your-own pottery for kids. All have unstructured studio time for kids and adults, as well as happy hour times for parents to get together.

The short, dark days of winter are over but long, sunny days are still ahead of us. February seems like a wedge between winter and spring: stores are already tempting us with swimsuits and garden gear yet the weather still beckons us to either bundle up or head indoors.
