Summer Imagineering

0

Summer Imagineering is a novel program for middle schoolers ages 12-14 who are ready to engage in hands-on problem solving in a non-competitive, encouraging environment. The program focuses on developing inquisitiveness, flexibility of mind, eagerness to learn, and resilience in the face of challenges. During the academic year, teachers have little opportunity to do this, especially given the dense curricula.

To develop strong critical thinking, problem solving, and design strategies, students are given a task which will entail building something out of low-tech materials, such as cardboard, straws, balloons, popsicle sticks, wheels, etc. They construct an initial prototype, evaluate its ability to solve the given problem, then create another, better model in a cycle commonly called the engineering design cycle. This is a methodical process in which failure is not bad—it is a critical step along the path to improvement. Each day, students conduct teacher-led experiments and lessons, in between building and planning sessions. They collaborate to generate ideas and work through several iterations to improve their model. The support and guidance that each student receives is tailored to their needs.

There are absolutely no prerequisites for joining the program—except for a willingness to participate wholeheartedly. Interest and enthusiasm are much more important than math or science skills. Each week has a different theme, and students engage with unique experiments, science concepts, and projects depending on that week’s theme. Sign up for one, two, three, or all four weeks!

The beauty of diversity, in of itself, is that it leads to experiences that sometimes can't be had from being around a centralized sect of people. By growing to understand and accept others with respect to their race, age, religion, etc., the children are afforded a greater learning opportunity that no textbook could ever provide.
