Superheroes Descend on New-York Historical Society

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superheroes in Gotham! The New-York Historical Society's brand-new exhibit debut celebrates our city's role in the creation of caped crusaders like Superman, Batman and Spider-Man, and the evolution of the genre from comics to TV shows to multimillion-dollar movies.

With only a few hands-on stations and lots of long passages to read, the exhibition was created with adults in mind. However, school-age kids who love comic books or superheroes will find plenty of things that make them exclaim, "Holy smokes!" Robin-style, including a Batmobile from the campy '60s TV series Batman and an original copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 featuring the first appearance of Spider-Man. It's one of our top NYC fall art picks this season.

Lower Hudson Valley Destination Playground: Hasbrouck Park in New Paltz

The leaves may be turning and the weather getting chillier, but this doesn’t mean kids have any less any energy. During our travels around the Lower Hudson Valley in search of fall fun, we checked out the Hasbrouck Park playground in New Paltz to see if it’s worth the trip and destination playground status.

We’ve already told you about the many cool things to do in New Paltz, and we’re pleased to add this playground as yet another reason for families to head up to Ulster County.

Chuze: A Free Grocery Shopping and Coupon App That Helps Save Time and Money

This post is sponsored by Chuze, but the opinions are those solely of the author.

When it comes to running errands and shopping for my family, I’m a master coupon clipper and list maker—but remembering to bring those coupons and lists with me when I leave the house is another story. The end result is I either miss out on savings or waste money buying something I’ve forgotten I already have at home.

So I'm super excited about our sponsor Chuze, a free app that eliminates the need to clip coupons, manage expiration dates, make lists or visit different stores to look for a particular item. It’s a money- and time-saving solution for busy parents who want to master their shopping and not let the chore master them.

Visit the Lowline Lab: A Park and Science Experiment Rolled Into One

The recently opened Lowline Lab on the Lower East Side is stunning, child-friendly, FREE, hosts workshops for kids—and unlike any park you've ever seen in NYC.

The indoor park was built to test and showcase technology for growing and sustaining plants underground. It'll be open weekend afternoons for six months, making it a great, leafy (and warm) destination this holiday season for locals and NYC visitors. But it's more than just another great place to get in out of the cold this winter. The Lowline Lab feels like a peek into some futuristic world. Read on for the inside scoop on New York City’s weirdest new park, what it’s like to visit with kids and how to register for its free Young Designers Program.

This Week’s Picks: Evening Hikes, Movies, and Halloween Haunts, Plus a Consignment Sale, October 19-23

In case you were wondering, yes, we are capable of talking about things other than Halloween. Take El Niño, for instance. El Niño may not be here yet, but once that soggy rascal does arrive, there won’t be much opportunity for heading outdoors; best to enjoy Griffith Park Observatory’s Sunset Walk and Talk one more time before the deluge arrives. We can talk about teens, too: Santa Monica high schoolers may want to check out the library's Teen Advisory Council, a leadership program advocating for the library that meets this Monday and throughout the year. As anyone with kids starting to think about college knows, leadership and community service are vital components of the application process. Or we could mention the LA Kids gigantic consignment sale in Woodland Hills, where 650 families have contributed 100,000 new and barely used items; if you're working on a Halloween costume, this may be a place to pick up a few items.

Oops - there we go again talking about Halloween. Well, let the hauntings begin, or rather continue! There’s a maze in Malibu, and Sherman Oaks has Boney Island. And as part of the El Capitan’s Halloween trilogy, Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas screens. It’s a favorite family tradition in my house to watch this movie, which somehow manages to work our two favorite holidays into one stop action animation masterpiece that includes a tremendous score by Danny Elfman.
