Mint: Zipcar competitor offers $2 car rental

If you've been reading this blog for a long time, you know about my love of ZipCar, the car sharing service that lets you rent a car in New York City by the hour. While ZipCar has been adding more cars and locations, there's a new competitor on the road, Mint.
Just like ZipCar, Mint offers car rental on demand and by the hour. Gas and EZ Pass are included. Even the rates are identical, except for an introductory promotional offer that allows you to rent a Mint car for just $2 an hour Monday through Thursday, 8 am to 5pm.
Mint currently only has cars available in Manhattan locations, but they have a great selection of vehicles from Smart Cars to pick-up trucks. Finally, if you have a ZipCar membership, Mint will waive their $25 registration fee.
If you're thinking of heading out of the city for Martin Luther King Jr Weekend, perhaps to go skiing, check out Mint at drivemint.com.

The service is still a
The service is still a little bit on the pricey side.
What they really need is a one way service. Obviously most people are going to want to commute into the city in the morning and back in the afternoon. They would have to give discounts to encourage more reverse commuters to rent.
They could also improve business by setting up a system where commuters can show up at big locations to find rides with others.
I had a not so nice
I had a not so nice experience with Mint. I'm currently a Zipcar member, and have been sine 2006, and was interested in Mint because of their potential $2 an hour rates. First of all those rates are for the tiniest of Smartcars so definitely not for someone with a family of children. That aside, the customer service I experienced on my first and last rental from them today is enough to make me cancel my membership.
There was no gas in the car and when I called the 800# half the time I got voicemail and half the time I got distracted reps. One of those reps literally yelled at me for complaining about the poor customer service and proceeded to tell me that they didn't need members like me.
I say, stick with the more established companies.
