Halloween Festivities On The East End

Though many of the Spooky Corn Mazes and Haunted Houses are now closed, the big day is still yet to come. By the time trick-or-treating happens this week, most kids have had the chance to show off their costume at a Halloween Party or in a school parade. But that doesn't take away from the excitement of going house-to-house or attending one of the celebrations listed below. There are also quite a few safe venues for trick-or-treating throughout Long Island.

Kid Friendly Nature Trails On The East End

Fall is the best season to spend time outdoors on Long Island. The relatively flat terrain enables young children to participate in a walk through the woods, but watch out for tree roots, which are easy to trip over. There are a variety of ways to make the trip special. Some families enjoy a quiet walk, some enjoy identifying the wildlife and plants, and some just enjoy having an opportunity to bond with each other. Whatever the reason, there are plenty of trails throughout the East End to explore. Pack some bug spray or put some on before heading out. Remember to check for ticks at the end of the outing. It is also a good idea to go to the bathroom ahead of time. Bring along some water, as many of the locations do not have water fountains. After the hike, make a day out of it and check out some apple farms on the East End.

Greenport is a quiet harbor town near the end of the North Fork of Long Island. There are a variety of dining options that are perfect for families. The views are beautiful and the atmosphere is relaxed. Take some time to stroll through town and browse through the shops before or after grabbing a bite to eat. There are plenty of places with outdoor seating and the breeze from the water makes it pleasant, even on a hot day. When heading out to Greenport, make a day out of it and stop by one of the family friendly vineyards along the way. Believe it or not, an afternoon picnic at a vineyard on the North Fork of Long Island is a joy for the entire family. There are quite a few options, whether tasting wine at a couple of wineries, or hanging out and enjoying a bottle of wine and music at one winery. There are many nice stops to choose from among the 30 plus vineyards on the North Fork. From Baiting Hollow to Greenport, there are vineyards that specialize in all types of award winning wines. Tasting rooms are meant for adults to sample alcoholic beverages, so please drink responsibly. Keep children outside whenever possible and be sure to keep an eye on them at all times. The Fourth of July is on Thursday this year, which for many people means a long weekend of fun, hopefully in the sun!
