Upstairs at 83 Hester St.

About Us
Upstairs at 83 Hester St. is a not-for-profit children’s art program that takes a process-oriented approach to art making. The classes will introduce participants to ways of seeing, sensing, thinking, and making that are explored through the arts. Together we will collaborate on projects, encounter works by contemporary artists, and learn new vocabularies. Guest artists whose work relates to our course theme will visit to co-teach lessons.

The Puppetry of Wonder

This coming spring session Upstairs will be exploring together the wonders of puppetry, and the puppetry of wonder. We will be immersed in the world of objects, discovering new ways of relating to things and using the potential of puppets to express what we may not know how to communicate. In this process, participants will be creating their puppets (characters), the place for their puppets to live (the set design), and their story (script). This project like the last two projects (Imaginary city I and II) will encourage participants to work across the arts: drawing, painting, sculpture, performance and more, and will continue to give the children a space to imagine other modes of living.

This is a three month project that requires commitment as each class will build on the previous session. Please register only if you are able to attend the full length of the program: once a week on Saturday mornings.
