The Handwork Studio’s purpose is to pass down the tradition of practical arts such as knitting, hand and machine sewing, embroidery, weaving, quilting, fashion, and crafts. Programs are run by skilled teachers dedicated to guiding students in learning new skills, advancing on old ones, and exploring their creative potential.

No matter where classes are taught, the goal is to create a supportive and fun environment. Free trial classes are available—call to register for one!

DUP - Puppetsburg

Puppetsburg performs edgy, interactive puppet shows for ages 4 months through 4 years. The highly contemporary shows involve dancing, instruments, dress-up photo-ops, and bubble time and explore themes like activism, cultural awareness, and more. Kids get to know a cast of handmade puppet characters including the fiery protagonist Clementine and celebri-puppets like Beyonce, Bob Dylan, RuPaul, and Ai Weiwei.

There’s a new show each week like: Farm to Table with Old McDonald, Clem forms a Tech Startup, Clem goes to Bollywood, and many more. Cultural edutainment that explores concepts like counting, vocabulary, and hipster culture, Puppetsburg is fun for infants, toddlers, and parents alike, preparing munchkins to be on-trend New York and world citizens. Silly Curls Classes at Sterlin Beauty Salon

Silly Curls offers fun and interactive classes where young girls and their mothers learn how to style their hair for any and every occasion. Each child is provided with a mannequin that serves as her “client” for the day, and accessories like glitter, hair chalk, and any other products needed to create the day’s style are also included.

Silly Curls teaches your child the most essential skills for creating great hairstyles all on their own. Students put their new skills into practice during the event so that afterwards they can recreate hairstyles at home. Events are taught by a team of enthusiastic and kid-friendly hairstylists who train the girls and reveal all the insider tricks-of-the-trade and professional techniques. Refreshments are provided.

Lewis H. Latimer House Museum - Tinker Lab

The Tinker Lab is the key educational program at Lewis H. Latimer House Museum, serving high-quality, innovative, hands-on activities that treat science and technology as an integral part of the humanities. In the Tinker Lab, participants use an array of technologies such as Scratch, Ev3, and Wedo and build from scratch using various micro-controllers, proto boards, and coding programs. The museum sees building in three-dimensional spaces and coding as invaluable 21st century literacy skills.

NYChessKids - Learning Center Classes

NYChessKids provides after-school programs at The Learning center in Chelsea, NYC. Activities vary by day and include chess, gifted-and-talented, math, and illustration. Fridays are free-play days—registered kids can come and play chess, board games, video games, and use the art space for free.

Kids are able to focus on the activities in a real learning environment. Programs run Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. Students have the option of taking one or two lessons per session. Snacks are provided.

Fleisher offers classes in Cambodian dance, fiber arts, sculpture, printmaking, digital photography, and more for kids ages 5-18. Classes are offered in fall, winter, and spring terms. Due to the popularity of these classes, they are drawn by lottery, so be sure to check in early.
