For many, Long Island conjures up images of beaches, malls and traffic and not much else. But, Long Island is filled with hidden gems that have nothing to do with shopping or the sea (unfortunately traffic is always possible). Once a farming community, you can still find a lot of family farms throughout the Island and these days many have added pick-your-own fields, petting zoos, gourmet fresh markets, garden centers and kid activities. Each farm maintains its personal flavor, here are a few that are really worth the drive.
If you are looking to sink your hands into the soil or spend a day gorging on fruit, head to one of Long Islands many pick-your-own farms.
If your kids love High School Musical, Glee or American Idol or if they just love to sing and dance, then they might be interested in the new family film, Standing Ovation. Standing Ovation is about 5 friends who go against the odds to perform in a singing and dancing competition. The film is filled with original music and dance numbers. Read on to watch the trailer and find out how you can get free tickets to the movie before it comes out, just for our Long Island readers.
The theme for weekend activities seems to be outdoors, outdoors and more great outdoors! Your children can participate in several events on the Island while learning about the natural world around them or creating their own masterpiece. Explore the beauty of Fire Island or listen to stories that remind you of the seaside. Take a few steps back in time and watch an old fashioned baseball game. If you’ve got a future tech-guru on your hands, have them explore toys and try to make their own. There’s something for everyone this weekend. Find what’s perfect for you and your family in the seven events below.
This is the weekend to celebrate the State Fruit of New Jersey: the blueberry! There is a Blueberry Bash at Terhune Orchards and a BlueBEARy Blast at Camden Children's Garden to honor the state fruit. There are also plenty of summer parties this weekend including a Beach-themed Party at the Morris Museum, lots of music and art at Maplewoodstock, and a family fun day and ice cream social at the Museum of Early Crafts and Trades. Finally, for those who just want to get down and dirty with nature, you can go on a guided fossil hunt at Big Brook and get up close with caterpillars and the Bugseum of New Jersey.
