Bronx Kids Guide

The Bronx is burning hot...with great things to do with kids. It's overflowing with wonderful parks and gardens, including The Bronx Zoo and The New York Botanical Garden. But that's not all. Wave Hill offers family art projects or outdoor activities every weekend. Plus there's the Bronx Equestrian Center, Orchard Beach, City Island and the real Little Italy: Arthur Avenue. If you're interested in the arts scene, take a ride on the Bronx Culture Trolley, which departs from Hostos College and takes you to various borough hot spots, including the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

NYC Beaches After Sandy: What to Expect at Rockaway, Coney Island, Brighton Beach and Others in 2013

Things to do with kids: NYC Beaches After Sandy: What to Expect at Rockaway, Coney Island, Brighton Beach and Others in 2013

New York City beaches open for the season this Memorial Day weekend despite the damage they sustained during Hurricane Sandy. The Parks Department staff, and sanitation and construction crews have been working nonstop to make sure they are safe and clean, and that the sand is back where it belongs. (In some communities, sand washed up onto residents' front lawns!) This is good news for NYC families because—much as we enjoy hitting the Jersey Shore, Long Island beaches and Fire Island—we're not big fans of renting cars or sitting in traffic.

While it won't quite be business as usual for New York City's beaches this summer, you'll still be able to hop on a subway, bus or ferry to hit the shores. From the "Bronx Rivera" to the iconic Coney Island to the Rockaways, these eight urban seasides offer everything that suburban beaches do except the out-of-town commute.

Miniature Golf Courses for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Miniature Golf Courses for NYC Kids

I admit it: Mini golf is one of those things I endure for the sake of my son. I never enjoyed it as a kid and I don’t love it as an adult, but my kid could play every day. I know that for many families, mini golf is a quintessential warm weather activity that they look forward to every year. And spring is definitely a great season to play before the summer humidity kicks in.

While there are plenty of courses on Long Island and in New Jersey , you don't need to head out of town for putt-putt golf. There are currently a dozen places to play mini golf right here in New York City (including one indoor course), complete with spinning windmills, bridges, water features, you know, the works. Even the course at Pier 25 in Hudson River Park, which was closed due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, has reopened.

Find out where else you can play mini golf in NYC. See you on the green!

Free Comic Book Day in NYC and Two Free Bronx Comic Cons

Things to do with kids: Free Comic Book Day in NYC and Two Free Bronx Comic Cons

We love comic books and comic cons almost as much as we love freebies. Put the two together and we're giddier than Iron Man with a new gadget (or girl).

This Saturday, May 4 is the annual Free Comic Book Day when shops across the country give away certain issues at no cost. We've got the scoop on how to find a participating comic shop near you, as well as details on two free comic cons in the Bronx this month, including the annual Kids Comic Con.

Best Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Spring 2013: 7 Great New Installations

Best Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Spring 2013: 7 Great New Installations

While spring brings outdoor festivals and fairs, and long days at NYC's playgrounds, it's also a great season for new museum exhibits. Alfresco sculpture installations at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the New York Botanical Garden, hands-on math and science fun at the New York Hall of Science, children's artwork at the Guggenheim, the Cloister's 75th anniversary and old-school music videos at the Museum of the Moving Image are just some of what's on tap this spring. Here are the top seven museum exhibits for families making their debuts this spring in New York City.

Little League Baseball, Softball and T-Ball for New York City Kids 2013

Things to do with kids: Little League Baseball, Softball and T-Ball for New York City Kids 2013

The Yankees and the Mets aren’t the only ones stepping up to the plate this spring. Thousands of kids across the city will be eagerly dusting off their cleats in anticipation of Little League’s opening day on Saturday, April 6 (though some teams kick off on Sunday, April 7 and throughout the rest of the month).

Joining a Little League team (or any other youth baseball organization) is great fun for the entire family. Parent participation isn't just encouraged, it’s mandatory. Moms and dads volunteer to help manage the leagues, coach the teams, run the concession stands and maintain the grounds. Since it's nonprofit, the registration fees are relatively affordable. Most cost under $200 for the entire season, and that includes those nifty uniforms. If that's still out of your range, some leagues offer financial assistance.

Because of high enrollment, many teams have pretty strict geographic boundaries, so kids need to register based on their home address and proof is required. With opening day coming up next month, some teams are full, but many are still open for registration and most offer wait lists—and unlike other wait lists in this town, I hear that these actually move.

Find out how to join a T-Ball, baseball or softball team in New York City this spring. If your kids would prefer to cheer from the sidelines than get in the game, we've got the scoop on some great Little League opening day bashes, too.

Spring Break for NYC Kids: Best Things to Do During Easter and Passover Recess in March 2013

Things to do with kids: Spring Break for NYC Kids: Best Things to Do During Easter and Passover Recess in March 2013

It's almost here! Monday, March 25 to Tuesday, April 2, New York City public school students are on spring break. You know what that means: Time to start planning memorable and enriching adventures for the whole family (unless of course you're sending the kids to a spring break camp).

If you're thinking of heading out of town for a last-minute vacation, you can find great nearby getaways in our NYC Family Day Trips Guide and more far-flung destinations and spring break deals on our Travel Site. But if a staycation is what you're after, there's plenty to keep you busy here in NYC. The American Museum of Natural History, the New York Hall of Science and the Brooklyn Children's Museum all have new interactive exhibits for kids, the New York International Auto Show is rolling into town and many family spots are hosting special programming during spring break. Plus, there's a ton of FREE fun, too, like Urban Park Rangers' nature activities, Splash Week swim time at citywide YMCAs, egg hunts and the annual Easter Parade, Macy's Flower Show and Nick Cave's awesome sounding Heard NY art performance in Grand Central Terminal.

And so much more! Read on for our favorite FREE or affordable family activities going on in New York City over spring break and remember to check our Event Calendar for additional options.

NYC Pool Party for Kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Children's Birthday Parties

Things to do with kids: NYC Pool Party for Kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Children's Birthday Parties

In the past, we've written about ways to host a summer urban pool party and shared our favorite outdoor NYC public pools. But this winter, a few of our readers wrote in asking where they could book an indoor pool party off-season. Swimming parties are certainly a decadent way to celebrate a birthday. The kids rip off their coats, jump in their bathing suits, hit in the water and get an instant taste of summer fun, regardless of what season it actually is.

Luckily, there are a bunch of indoor pools in NYC, and while most of them are only open to members or currently enrolled students, many offer party packages to the general public. These indoor swimming parties are also a great option in the summer since the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation pools don't offer birthday packages and have a long list of strictly enforced rules.
