Want to cut down on the amount of “stuff” your kids receive for Christmas, a birthday, or another special day, but make sure the occasion is no less memorable? We’ve rounded up some of the coolest experiences the Boston area has to offer kids—and we think the smiles you’ll get are worth the splurge. Plus, less time spent shopping means more time for you and your family to enjoy fun activities together.

Trapeze Lessons
Young acrobats-in-training can practice flipping and flying through the air with trapeze lessons at the Revolution Flying Trapeze School in Watertown. Classes are offered for children ages 6 and up; multi-class packages also are available.

Helicopter Rides
Go above the city with a private helicopter tour. East Coast Aero Club offers three different tour packages, starting at Hanscom Field in Bedford, that can give your child a birds eye view of Boston landmarks, beaches, and skyscrapers. Children of any age can participate in a tour; infants and toddlers under 2 can fly for free on an adult’s lap.

Museum Sleepovers
Put on your PJs and see what really happens when the lights go down at the museum with a sleepover at favorite Boston-area attractions including Franklin Park Zoo, Museum of Science, and Battleship Cove.

High Tea
Think afternoon tea is too sophisticated for kids? We’ve got good news: There are a number of child-friendly places around Boston where you and your child can enjoy high tea together. Reservations are recommended, so be sure to plan ahead for your special day.

Annual Memberships
If you're looking for a gift that can be enjoyed throughout the year, annual memberships to local attractions are a great way to go. Membership at the New England Aquarium includes invitations to exclusive members-only events; advance registration for Harbor Discoveries Summer Camp; and discounted rates for IMAX, educational programs, animal encounters, and whale watches. LEGOLAND Discovery Center Boston offers annual passes; in addition to unlimited visits, other perks include discounts on birthday parties, cafe purchases, and LEGO sets, as well as access to special events. Another great option is the Boston Children's Museum, which offers three different family membership packages. Depending on which level of membership you choose, you can enjoy special extras such as behind-the-scenes tours, guest passes, a birthday party, member-only hours (a huge perk), and reciprocal memberships with hundreds of museums across the country.
