Beam Center - Classes

0

Beam Center is a Brooklyn-based community of learning where artists guide young creators aged 6 to 18. Our hands-on programs in technology, imagination and craft help young people build their character, courage to think for themselves, and capacity for collaboration and invention. We believe that children can best learn to address these challenges by engaging with adults, who make a life and living from pursuits that require invention, design, planning and production: artists, architects, engineers, craftspeople, teachers, designers, chefs, musicians.

Inventgenuity Workshops at Beam Center are after-school activities in imagination, technology, and craft for kids in 2nd through 8th grades. Workshops run from 4:00 to 5:30 pm, Monday through Thursday; Beam Center is open to kids from 3:00 to 6:00 pm on those days. Snack is provided and early arrivals have a chance to do homework. We offer 8 and 16 week workshops.

Family Programs take place one Saturday a month at the Center for Architecture. These two-hour programs introduce families to architecture and design through hands-on art and model building activities, gallery tours, and design challenges.

Teen Workshops take place one Saturday a month. These full day programs are for high school students interested in learning more about the city’s built environment and developing their architectural design skills.

Vacation Programs are offered during mid-winter and spring vacations. These programs give curious kids an opportunity to dive into an architectural topic of interest and test out their own design ideas. Each program explores a different theme through design challenges and building activities.

Summer Programs give students entering grades 3-12 a chance to develop their own architectural designs and models. Summer programs are five days long with each week focusing on a different topic. These programs combine hands-on art and building projects with one-of-a-kind trips to notable buildings, parks, and architectural sites. Activities include drawing, 3-D model making, interior design, city planning, computer design, "green" design projects, and intensive two-week Architectural Design Studios for high school students.

The Fashion Class of Merrick - After-School & Weekend Classes

0

Kids ages 6-12, tweens, and teens can learn to sew, design, and create fashion at The Fashion Class. Programs run after school and on the weekends for 8-13 weeks in the fall, winter, spring, and summer.

Children learn to use a sewing machine to create clothing they can wear. Each class ends with a free fashion show on TFC's exclusive 24-foot light-up runway. In addition to sewing, classes are offered in fashion illustration, design, branding, marketing, and even making a fashion portfolio. Most classes are 90 minutes long and meet once per week.

All supplies are included, and there are no extra fees. Students work on easy-to-use sewing machines equipped with speed control and needle guards for extra safety. The Fashion Class provides fun fabrics and allows students to decorate their projects with their own unique style. The amazing instructors work in the fashion industry as apparel, costume, and accessory designers and love to teach.
