New York City Kids Weekend Events for September 18-20: Free Fall Festivals, Feasts, Harvests, and Fairs, Books, Chess and More

If the chill in the air doesn’t give it away, the abundance of apples, pumpkins, corn and hay sure does: Fall is here. Though we’ve said goodbye to the beach, there’s even more to do outside this season, like playing in pumpkin patches right here in New York City, enjoying fall foods at all the street fairs and festivals, learning how to play chess (OK, not a typical outdoor activity), biking, readings, and celebrating various cultures. Get a taste (literally!) of all that this weekend offers at events like the Irish Fair, San Gennaro feast, Native American Festival, Queens County Fair, Tasty Harvest, Tour de Parc and even more.

Indoor Sports Arenas and Facilities with Programs for Kids on Long Island

In addition to our weekly events posts, we are trying to share with you some of Long Island's best classes and programs offered for kids. Last week we wrote about some of the world class ballet programs being offered. This week,  since we all know this great Indian Summer isn't gonna last forever, we want to share some of the Island's best Indoor Sports Programs. There are plenty of indoor sports facilities here, but not all of them offer great children's programs. Here are some of the most notable facilities which offer great children's programs, classes and leagues:

News: Going Back to School Green, Obama Speaks, New Shake Shack, More

We're back to school and it's full of surprise and promise. Inside find eco-friendly back to school tips, how to get a cool monthly surprise in the mail for your kids, where the new shake shack will be, places to take family farm vacations, the 400 top New Yorkers of all time, and Obama's message to kids (if you missed it).

Weekend Events for Kids on Long Island, September 11-13: End of Summer Festivals, Pet Expo, and More

With school back in session, chances are your weekend sports and activities have started up again as well. I actually miss having my kids around, though, and that's why I'm looking forward to spending some time with them this weekend. If you're like me, luckily, there are plenty of great things going on this weekend on Long Island, even if you have to squeeze in some quality family time between practice or class. Here are our suggestions for some of the best events:

New York City Kids Weekend Events for September 11-13: Free Festivals Galore, Hudson Celebrations, Drinks for Mom and More

Summer may be over, but the events are not slowing down at all. In fact, it’s almost as if everyone waited for summer vacation to end and planned all these absurdly cool (and mostly free) events for this weekend. From celebrating Henry Hudson’s 400th anniversary, to county fairs, book festivals, motorcycle shows, films, and more fun on Governor’s Island (and you thought GI was done for the season…) there’s almost too much to do to fit it all into one weekend. Ease everyone's transition back-to-school by picking your favorite events and then heading out—there’s no time to waste!

Don't forget we have more weekend activities in our event calendar and separate round-ups for Long Island and New Jersey on those pages. Or sign up to get our new Long Island and New Jersey newsletters.
