Weekend Fun for NYC Kids: City of Water Day, Come Out & Play July 18-19

It's another summer weekend full of fantastic and mostly FREE family fun. Three of our top event picks of the month take place on Saturday or Sunday: the jazz-themed SummerStage Queens Family Day in Long Island City, Come Out & Play Family Day on Governors Island and City of Water Day, which has events throughout the five boroughs.

If you need to chill out, literally, with indoor air-conditioning, the Museum of the Moving Image is hosting a special 30th-anniversary screening of Sesame Street Presents: Follow that Bird, and two of NYC's oldest houses are hosting family days.

These are just a few of the great things going on this weekend. All of our best bets are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Summer Fun Guide, which highlights the best pools, water playgrounds and beaches in NYC.

Must-Try Ice Cream Shops in Lower Hudson Valley

Few summer traditions are as timeless as ice cream melting down your wrist on a hot day. My kids and I don't need much of an excuse to indulge in this tasty treat and though ice cream stands, shops and chains are plentiful throughout lower Hudson Valley, there are a few local shops that really stand out. All of these are destination-worthy, using handmade or locally sourced ice cream for their creative concoctions and traditional favorites. Here is our list of 5 destination-worthy ice cream shops in the lower Hudson Valley. Also, be sure to check out our top picks for local ice cream shops in Westchester County!

Best Boston Walking Tours for Kids and Families

While you can certainly take your family on a do-it-yourself tour of the Freedom Trail—or any of the historically or culturally significant sights in the area—sometimes it's nice to let an expert do the talking. Since Boston is such a great walking city, there are some excellent choices for tours that keep curious minds happy. As a big fan of lifelong learning, I'm happy to report that even though I'm a proud Bostonian, each of these tours taught me something I didn't know. Best of all, they kept my kids entertained and eager to learn more.

From nature talks and fun runs to festivals and puppet shows, there is no shortage of family fun on the East End of Long Island. Two of our favorites happening this weekend include the Riverhead Fire Department commemorating the 80th anniversary of its drill team with a two-day celebration, and the sweet corn festival at Harbes Family Farm.
