Beautiful autumn weather weekends are dwindling fast, so put on those cozy sweaters and take the family out for an adventure. It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superheroes in Gotham! The New-York Historical Society's brand-new exhibit debut celebrates our city's role in the creation of caped crusaders like Superman, Batman and Spider-Man, and the evolution of the genre from comics to TV shows to multimillion-dollar movies.

With only a few hands-on stations and lots of long passages to read, the exhibition was created with adults in mind. However, school-age kids who love comic books or superheroes will find plenty of things that make them exclaim, "Holy smokes!" Robin-style, including a Batmobile from the campy '60s TV series Batman and an original copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 featuring the first appearance of Spider-Man. And as part of the El Capitan’s Halloween trilogy, Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas screens. It’s a favorite family tradition in my house to watch this movie, which somehow manages to work our two favorite holidays into one stop action animation masterpiece that includes a tremendous score by Danny Elfman.
