Weekend Fun for NYC Kids: Figment Arts Festival, Egg Rolls & Egg Creams, Big Apple BBQ, Design Lab at NY Hall of Sci June 7-8

Five of our top family event picks for June are happening this weekend and we're trying to figure out if we can hit them all since we can't seem to choose. (It's OK—we love a challenge!) There's Madison Square Park's tasty Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, Governors Island's FREE Figment arts festival, the Egg Rolls & Egg Creams Festival on the Lower East Side, the debut of New York Hall of Science's hands-on Design Lab and a no-cost concert by Grammy nominated kid rockers Brady Rymer and the Little Band that Could in Wagner Park.

But wait—there's more! Like the performance-filled Red Hook Festival, the New York Aquarium's World Oceans Celebration and FREE tours of the famous Little Red Light House.

These are just a few of the great things going on this weekend. All of our best bets are below. As always, you can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Summer Fun Guide. Before heading out on your adventures, be sure to download our FREE Mommy Poppins Kids on the Go app so you can find the best family destinations wherever you happen to be in NYC.

New York Aquarium: Plan a Fun-Filled Visit & Celebrate World Oceans Day

My two boys absolutely love going to an aquarium (they’ve been obsessed with fish since watching Finding Nemo), so we were super excited to pay our first visit to the New York Aquarium last month. While the Aquarium is still rebuilding after damage from Superstorm Sandy, there is still plenty to see and do for a day of family fun right off the Coney Island boardwalk.

National Doughnut Day: Free Doughnuts This Friday and Our Favorite Spots to Indulge

There are very few things Mommy Poppins loves more than a free deal...and free foods are at the very top of the list. Every year, on National Doughnut Day, the first Friday in June, Americans raise a fried, sugary, round pastry in remembrance of the Doughnut Lassies who served our country's servicemen in trenches during World War I---or at least, they should. Learn how you too can celebrate this national holiday with a FREE doughnut.

Chancellor's Day Fun: Things to Do with Kids on June 5 When NYC Public Schools Are Closed

Every first Thursday of June, New York City public school students have the day off for Chancellor's Conference Day. What's that you ask? Well originally it was known as Brooklyn-Queens Day, an obscure religious holiday most folks knew little about that was only observed in those boroughs. But somewhere along the line the name and meaning changed, and suddenly kids throughout NYC got a secular public school holiday.

If you're lucky enough to be able to take the day off with the kids, we have some ideas for how to make the most of it, from cool summer fun (that may get rained out unfortunately) to the kickoff of the public library's summer reading program. But if you've got to work on Thursday like the teachers (it's used as a school staff development day), there are a handful of drop-off holiday camps where your kids can have a blast while you do what you've got to do.

Art in the Park: Grounds for Sculpture and other Sculpture Parks in NJ

Number 46 on our list of 100 Things To Do In New Jersey With Kids Before They Grow Up is the outdoor family gem, Grounds For Sculpture. The 42+ acre sculpture park and arts center is part museum, part open-air adventure and whether you're an art expert or novice, you will be enchanted from the get go. For a great summer day trip, check out our tips on GFS and other sweet art parks in the tristate area.
