Pumpkin Seeds, Pedestrian Streets, Pissed-off Neighbors and More
7/7/08
- By Nina
Just cause the last time you sat down to read a newspaper was when "pooped out" still meant tired doesn't mean you can't stay up to date with what's going on. We've rounded up the top stories you don't want to miss from the NYC media this week.
Hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend, caught some fireworks, ate some bbq and didn't wind up in the cab of a flat bed truck with your car towing behind on your way home like my family (seriously). A quick reminder to all our subscribers, we changed our email system and need you to verify your subscription so you continue to get our emails. If you are not getting emails or have questions, feel free to email us at mommy@mommypopppins.com And now, on to the news of the week....
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
Neighbor Issues. NY Times reports on the patter of little feet which is fast becoming the most common source of neighbor complaints in the city and offers some guidance to parents looking for a place with little ones. And, feel free to complain about your complaining neighbors in the comments here.
Reclaiming Even More Streets. Add Brooklyn Heights to the list of neighborhoods creating pedestrian streets this summer. Beginning July 6, Montague Street between Clinton Street and Montague Terrace will be transformed into a pedestrian piazza from 10 am to 5 pm every Sunday in July.
Eat Better. The NY Times blog has a great list of healthful foods people should be eating but aren’t. For example, did you know that pumpkin seeds contain high levels of a mineral associated with lowering your risk of an early death?
More locations to spend your Whole Paycheck. And for more places to buy those pumpkin seeds, Time Out Kids reports on a new Whole Foods store set to open in Tribeca on July 9. Sign up for preview tours on Monday, July 7, from 10am to 5:45pm. You can get a special sneak peek on an insider tour where they promise lots of free stuff (though it does cost $10 - all proceeds go to Manhattan Youth Organizations, kids under 12 are free). RSVP to david@organicworksmarketing.com
Recycled Nikes. A National Geographic Kids campaign to get kids to recycle their old sneakers sets a new Guinness Record and thanks to Nike, you too can turn your stinky old kicks into playgrounds, I really can't imagine a better fate for an old pair of sneakers.
And, Cobble Hill finally announced the schedule for their family friendly free concert series in Cobble Hill Park Thursday Nights at 7pm.
