Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: Flag Day and Nature Activities, June 13-14

Our nation celebrates Flag Day this Sunday. Since Philadelphia is the birthplace of our flag and its creator, Betsy Ross, it's fitting that we highlight Old Glory in our weekend post.

Throughout Historic Philadelphia, families can learn about the history of our country's flag. Festivities begin at the Betsy Ross House, where a 13-star flag is raised. Afterward, watch the Grand Parade as it marches from the National Constitution Center to Independence Hall, learn flag etiquette and enjoy a performance by the Spirit of Liberty Sky Diving Team.

In addition to flag fun, families can enjoy the outdoors in many ways this weekend. Have a Victorian-style picnic at Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, search for Awesome Amphibians at Upper Perkiomen Valley Park, examine trees in The Millennium Grove at Norristown Farm Park or watch the Brandywine Polo Club play a match.

Weekend Fun for Boston Kids - Boston Pride & Dragon Boats, June 13-14

You probably know by now how much we love free summer events, and this weekend offers some of the best bang for no bucks out there. Whether you're showing your pride, hunting for dragons in the Charles, or watching dancers skip to the beat, the only cash you'll shell out is for a ride on the T and some tasty street food.

This is a particularly great weekend for musical events, too. The Boston Early Music Festival, which has been going on all week, hosts its Family Day, which is perfect for kids. Meanwhile, Cirque de la Symphonie with the Boston Pops is equal parts concert and big-top spectacle.

There are 70 museums and cultural venues on the schedule, and with so many wonderful choices, it can be difficult to decide which ones to pick. A Bite-Size Trip to Asia at New World Mall Food Court in Flushing, Queens

Last summer when my family and I were lucky enough to visit Singapore for a whole week, one of our favorite activities was going to the hawker food stalls, which are just what they sound like: stands in a sprawling indoor market. Going to the hawker stalls is quite an event; they are hot and crowded, and there’s exotic, interesting, amazing food everywhere you look.

Our travels in Asia were fantastic, but NYC never lets us down. It seems like no matter what adventure we enjoy around the globe, there’s a version of it right here at home. Yes, Queens, the undisputed center of the universe for international cuisine, has its own take on hawker stalls in Flushing’s Chinatown. It's the New World Mall Food Court, which offers incredible, inexpensive eats from China, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea and Thailand all under one roof.

With so many choices and lots of menu items not listed in English, the food hall can be a bit overwhelming and chaotic. We took a visit to share some tips on how to make the most of an ethnic food adventure in the Asian food halls of Queens with your kids.
