What We're Reading

Me

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

Historic Opportunity to Visit Aboard The USS New York

Let me put it out there that I'm not a big fan of war, but I am intrigued by the arrival of the brand new, not yet commissioned, USS New York in our harbor. This is not something that happens every day and, I have to say, reading about this ship, it's pretty interesting.

Here's what I find interesting about the USS New York and information about a unique, possibly once in a lifetime, opportunity to visit on board the USS New York this week:

Some cool facts about the USS New York:

The USS New York is an amphibious landing craft, which will carry Osprey aircrafts, helicopters and hovercraft-like landing crafts.

Bow stem includes seven and a half tons of steel recovered from the World Trade Center's twin towers

1,200 Louisiana workers stayed to keep building the ship after Hurricane Katrina hit the shipyard in August 2005

Over 1000 Naval crew and Marines can be stationed on it.

I honestly never knew ships had crests before, or thought about what they might be. I love that they explain all the symbolism in this one. Pretty cool.

I think lots of kids will be interested in this interactive cutaway view of the ship.

If you want to try to visit the USS New York, here is what you need to know:

Now docked at Pier 88, on 12th Avenue at 48th Street -- near the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum -- will be open to the public free of charge:

– Wednesday, November 4 – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
– Thursday, November 5 – 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
– Sunday, November 8 – 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
– Monday, November 9 – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
– Tuesday, November 10 – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
– Wednesday, November 11 – 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
(Dates and times are subject to change; updates will be posted here.)

NO LARGE PACKAGES OR BACKPACKS WILL BE PERMITTED.

REcommendations for those who plan to go aboard the ship:
-- Arrive early as lines may be long, especially on Sunday, Nov. 8.
-- Enter at the West 46th Street and 12th Avenue entranceway.
-- Bring a photo ID.
-- Wear comfortable shoes.
