Best New Summer Day Camps for NYC Kids 2013

Things to do with kids: Best New Summer Day Camps for NYC Kids 2013

Every year around this time, the annual summer camp panic sets in for parents. We suffer from a particularly acute case of it here in NYC, due to the overwhelming number of summer day camps available. It's difficult to know where to send your child for the best summer experience, especially when there are new programs popping up every year.

To help you make an informed choice about the new camps on the block, we've rounded up the most innovative and enriching summer programs set to debut this summer. Some are brand-new, others are places we love that are significantly expanding their already awesome offerings. At these notable new camps, kids can learn about animals, create cool contraptions, study STEM concepts, hone their artistic skills, design bridges and playgrounds, and tackle a ton of other projects. And the options run the gamut from preschoolers to teens.

Be sure to check out our Summer Camp Guide for info on lots of other programs in NYC, commuter camps and sleepaway options.

Things to Do Over Holiday Break with NYC Kids 2012

Things to do with kids: Things to Do Over Holiday Break with NYC Kids 2012

Ever since my son started elementary school, I find that there just isn't enough free time for us to enjoy all of the great things New York City has to offer. That's why we love holiday break. We never leave town—instead, we fill our schedule with awesome museum outings, live stage shows, cool movies and magical holiday experiences. Call me crazy, but we even brave the crowds at the New York Botanic Garden's Holiday Train Show, the Rockefeller Center tree and the department store holiday windows.

If you're looking for entertaining and enriching things to do with your kids over holiday break in New York City, we have lots of ideas—more than 35 of them in fact, many free or inexpensive. You can find even more seasonal activities in our Holiday Fun Guide.

NYC School Holiday Camps: Fun All-Day Kids' Programs for Election Day, Veterans Day and Beyond

Things to do with kids: NYC School Holiday Camps: Fun All-Day Kids' Programs for Election Day, Veterans Day and Beyond

Every fall we get emails from readers asking us to recommend school holiday camps for Election Day (Tuesday, November 6), Veterans Day (Monday, November 12) and all those other days when public schools are closed but many parents still need to work. (Columbus Day, Rosh Hashanah, Black Friday, we're looking at you.) While there are many wonderful mini-camps to choose from during the big school vacations like holiday, midwinter and spring breaks, it seems harder to find coverage on those one-off holidays that pop up throughout the academic year.

But we did the research and found that there actually are quality programs offering fun-filled one-day camps on many of these holidays, where kids can enjoy soccer, cooking, theater, robotics and chess. So don't take the day off from work: Send your kids to one of these cool-sounding holiday camps instead.

Free Halloween Parades for New York City Kids 2012

Things to do with kids: Free Halloween Parades for New York City Kids 2012

Due to Hurricane Sandy, most parades on Wednesday, October 31 have been canceled, even the huge annual Village Halloween Parade. A few are still going on, but some we can't confirm. If in doubt, assume it has been canceled!

Everybody loves a parade, which means we're all absolutely smitten with Halloween parades. While we think every family should take the kids to the big Greenwich Village Halloween Parade at least once, it can be pretty scary. It's always insanely crowded and loud, and many of the costumes are risqué, gory or in poor taste (which we happen to love, but we realize not every parent feels that way).

If you're ready to watch it, the parade starts at 7pm on October 31 and winds its way up Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street. (Plan to arrive much earlier though if you want to snag a good viewing spot.) But if your family isn't up for the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade just yet, there are plenty of smaller, kid-friendly NYC neighborhood parades, and many are part of larger fun-filled Halloween festivals. We've rounded up 19 of these community-driven Halloween processions for families to watch or march in, and most of them are FREE. If you don't live in a great trick-or-treating area, these parades are also a wonderful way to hunt for candy in another community. And check out our Halloween Fun Guide for even more seasonal fun.

Fall Festivals, Fairs, Carnivals and Celebrations for NYC Kids September 2012

Things to do with kids: Fall Festivals, Fairs, Carnivals and Celebrations for NYC Kids September 2012

Summer break may be over but just because the kids are going back to school doesn't mean you can't continue having lots of family fun. Some of New York City's best annual events take place in September including free family favorites like the West Side County Fair, the Medieval Festival in Fort Tryon Park and Children's Day at the South Street Seaport.

There are also celebrations that aren't aimed at families but have plenty of kid appeal, including Little Italy's Feast of San Gennaro, the multidisciplinary Dumbo Arts Festival and the mind-blowing Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science, which we rave about every year.

We've got the scoop on all of these plus 11 other shindigs, 17 in total! So mark your calendar: You don't want to miss these fun and mostly free festivals and celebrations.

7 Cool New NYC After-school Classes and Programs for Kids

Things to do with kids: 7 Cool New NYC After-school Classes and Programs for Kids

For my family, back to school means back to being scheduled. And while I've been known to gripe about my son being overscheduled, I realize he's got it pretty good when it comes to after-school classes. There are just so many awesome and enriching extracurricular programs for New York City kids these days, it's tough to choose just one (or two or three). Plus fabulous new classes pop up every year.

That's why we're highlighting seven brand-new after-school programs for NYC kids that sound exceptionally cool. We're not talking about your usual athletics and arts offerings. At these seven super-creative specialty spots, kids can build their own robots, explore genetics, design a runway collection, make their own animated flicks and enjoy more educational hands-on fun.

Cheap (and a Few Free) Dance Classes for NYC Kids: Ballet, Flamenco and Other Children's Programs in Manhattan

Things to do with kids: Cheap (and a Few Free) Dance Classes for NYC Kids: Ballet, Flamenco and Other Children's Programs in Manhattan

With a son who is totally into ballet, it wasn't long before his little sister wanted lessons, too. While I try to be fair when it comes to extracurricular activities for my kids, enrolling in multiple classes really adds up, especially with dance, which can quickly go from once a week to twice a week to oh my God, we're living in the studio!

As a result, I'm always on the hunt for the most reasonably priced dance classes in New York City. And today, I'm sharing what I've found with all of you.

Things to do with kids: Best New York City Views: 10 Spots to See and Photograph NYC

Visitors come to New York City from the world over to eat our pizza, feel our energy and marvel at our spectacular views. But even for us locals, NYC is an awe-inspiring sight (we just need to remember to slow down and take it in every once in a while).

While tourists routinely flock to the Empire State Building or the Top of the Rock to literally look down on the city, there are less well known vantage points that also offer incredible views of NYC, including parks, promenades, museums and a tram. So grab your camera and get ready to fall in love with New York City for the first time—or all over again.
