Fort Greene Clinton Hill Kids Neighborhood Guide

With its quiet tree-lined streets, historic architecture and amazing 30-acre Ft. Greene Park, Brooklyn's Fort Greene Clinton Hill is very popular with families. Cultural attractions include the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which launched its BAMfamily series in 2013, and the state-of-the-art Barclays Center, which hosts live Disney extravaganzas, the circus and Nets home games, plus there are lots of kid-friendly restaurants and the treasure-filled Brooklyn Flea. Ft. Greene Park, home to the iconic Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, is definitely the heart of the 'hood with its two playgrounds, ball fields, sledding hills, lawns for picnicking and annual family events like the beloved Halloween Festival and the summertime Music In the Grove kids' concert series. Our Fort Greene Clinton Hill guide highlights all of our favorite things to do and places to visit with kids in the nabe.

Special Needs Dance Classes for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Special Needs Dance Classes for NYC Kids

A few weeks ago I wrote about special needs music classes for kids in the five boroughs. Today I'm spotlighting dance programs for children with special needs in NYC.

Just as organizations like Daniel’s Music Foundation changed my son’s life and allowed him to be able to get up on stage in front of people and sing, there are dance programs that help children with special needs do the same with dance. There are a variety of dance classes and summer camps throughout NYC for children with special needs. Here are some of our favorites:

Best NYC Kids’ Theater Shows Spring 2013: 14 Family Shows at Non-Broadway Prices

Best NYC Kids’ Theater Shows Spring 2013: 14 Family Shows at Non-Broadway Prices

Our spring culture coverage continues with a look at the most promising family shows opening this season. Reading the papers, you might think the only great productions for kids are on Broadway. But while Matilda (it's dark!) and Cinderella (it's light!) command the media spotlight and cost big bucks, there are many wonderfully creative children's theater performances off Broadway and beyond.

The selection this spring is particularly intriguing and there are options for all age groups, including a few shows that are perfect for first-time theatergoers. The New Victory has a pair of plotless spectacles, one acrobatic, the other urban dance, and Making Books Sing and TADA! Youth Theater are adapting popular kids' books by Eileen Spinelli and Ezra Jack Keats. Plus the New York Children's Theater Festival returns for its second year on the Upper West Side, and the tenth annual International Toy Theater Festival takes place in Brooklyn. The one thing all of these shows have in common? You can take the kids to see them without dipping into their college fund—most are $20 or under and one is even FREE.

Fort Greene Clinton Hill Kids' Classes and Drop-in Play Spaces

Things to do with kids: Fort Greene Clinton Hill Kids' Classes and Drop-in Play Spaces

We continue our month-long focus on adjoining Brooklyn neighborhoods Fort Greene and Clinton Hill with a look at our top spots for kids' classes and indoor play. One of the busiest and biggest romping spots in the area is the beautiful Ft Greene Park, which offers playgrounds, ball courts, and lots of open lawns, hills and a huge set of stairs to explore. But there are plenty of places for kids to play and get creative indoors, too.

True to the artistic spirit of the neighborhood, many programs are focused on movement, music and art, while the drop-in tot spots are great places for the younger set to work on their budding social and motor skills. There are also spots that accommodate the whole family with Mommy & Me sessions, play groups and all-ages swim times.

Things to Do in Fort Greene Park with Kids

Things to Do in Fort Greene Park with Kids

One of New York City's oldest green spaces, Ft Greene Park is like a mini-Central Park, jam-packed with fun activities and loads of history. Originally the site of a Revolutionary War and War of 1812 fort, it became Brooklyn's first public park in the mid-19th century, and in 1867, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (the masterminds behind Central Park and Prospect Park) redesigned it into the 30-acre layout we know today.

A true neighborhood hub, Ft Greene Park features two playgrounds, a nature center, amazing old trees, tennis and basketball courts, great hills for sledding and the hilltop Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, a memorial to the thousands of Americans who died in captivity aboard British prison ships during the Revolutionary War. Ft Greene Park also has a wonderful conservancy that organizes popular events, including annual family favorites like the Halloween Festival and the summer Music In the Grove kids' concert series.

We continue our month-long focus on Fort Greene Clinton Hill, Brooklyn with a tour of this stunning park and a look at all of the things there are to do here.

Fort Greene Clinton Hill with Kids: Top 35 Things to Do for NYC Families

Known for their picturesque tree-lined streets and historic architecture, adjacent Brooklyn neighborhoods Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have lots of attractions for families. There's the amazing Ft. Greene Park, a 30-acre oasis with two playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, a nature center, a running track, soccer fields and great hills for sledding. Plus the park's hard-working conservancy organizes popular annual events for families like the beloved Halloween Festival and the Music In the Grove kids' concert series during the summer.

The area has lots of excellent culture spots, too, notably the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which launched its BAMfamily series in 2013, and the state-of-the-art Barclays Center, which hosts live Disney extravaganzas, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and Brooklyn Nets home games. Plus Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have great kid-friendly restaurants, the Brooklyn Flea's Fort Greene flagship location, easy subway access and a pair of active parent listservs: Fort Greene Kids and Parents Around the Hill.

This month, we'll offer an in-depth look at everything Fort Greene and Clinton Hill have to offer families, including our favorites spots to play, eat and experience. For the purposes of our posts, our geographical boundaries are Flushing Avenue to the north and Atlantic Avenue to the south between Flatbush Avenue and Bedford Avenue. But today we're starting with our top 35 things to do with kids in the neighborhood.

Underground Art: Take a Tour of the Best NYC Subway Art for Families

Underground Art: Take a Tour of the Best NYC Subway Art for Families

We keep our Museum Guide filled with the best current NYC exhibits for kids and families. But this being New York City, some of the coolest installations are actually free public art displays on the streets, in the parks and even down in the subway.

Going on a do-it-yourself tour of underground subway art is a fun (and almost free) activity, especially when it's cold or rainy. Of course with more than 250 pieces of art in our city's subway stations, not all are worth a special trip. That's why we've picked out nine favorites, all permanently on view, that will really intrigue kids, from funky murals to illuminated installations, whimsical sculptures to an interactive musical work.

Best Sledding Hills in New York City

Things to do with kids: Best Sledding Hills in New York City

Many of my favorite memories from growing up in NYC involve snow days. The outdoor parking lot on my corner would plow all the snow into one corner, making our own private sledding hill. We would use garbage can lids or pieces of cardboard to sled down this very short, but very steep hill. We also liked to tunnel in between the parked cars to create forts.

Ah, but times have changed. My street urchin days are over and now we use real sleds and real hills to go sledding. Here are some of the best places to go sledding in New York City, as recommended by my family and our readers. Feel free to add your favorites in the comments.

Best NYC Kids' Concerts for Winter 2013: Rockin' Live Music Shows

Things to do with kids: Best NYC Kids' Concerts for Winter 2013: Rockin' Live Music Shows

Earlier this week, we shared our favorite NYC spots where kids can run around (or skate or swim or bike) indoors when it's too cold to play outside. But sometimes the best way for the entire family to get their sillies out is to jump around at a live music show. My daughter and I love discovering bands and musicians together, and we're always on the lookout for new-to-us groups to add to our ever-growing list of favorites.

There are so many cool kids' concert series in New York City—Bring Your Own Kid at 92YTribeca, Just Kidding at Symphony Space, the Tot Music Fest at Littlefield, to name a few—that you could easily see three shows every week (as my daughter would like to do)! But to give your dancing shoes (and your wallet) a break, we've rounded up our top 11 family concerts this winter. In addition to picks at all of the major series, we're also highlighting two local kindie rock faves who are playing the BAMkids Film Festival as well as a couple of totally free shows. In fact, almost all of these concerts cost less than $15 per person.
