Dumbo Kids Neighborhood Guide

Brooklyn's Dumbo is one of NYC's funkiest neighborhoods but it's not just for hipsters; there's plenty for families to enjoy. This former industrial area is now a culture, arts and shopping hub filled with charming children's boutiques, tasty spots like Dewey's Candy Store and Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, and Brooklyn Bridge Park, which features incredible views of lower Manhattan, Jane's Carousel, wonderful playgrounds at Pier 1 and Pier 6, and lots of kid-friendly activities and festivals. The neighborhood also hosts the annual weekend-long Dumbo Arts Festival, which includes lots of opportunities for families to explore and create super-cool art.

Best NYC Kids’ Theater Shows Spring 2013: 14 Family Shows at Non-Broadway Prices

Best NYC Kids’ Theater Shows Spring 2013: 14 Family Shows at Non-Broadway Prices

Our spring culture coverage continues with a look at the most promising family shows opening this season. Reading the papers, you might think the only great productions for kids are on Broadway. But while Matilda (it's dark!) and Cinderella (it's light!) command the media spotlight and cost big bucks, there are many wonderfully creative children's theater performances off Broadway and beyond.

The selection this spring is particularly intriguing and there are options for all age groups, including a few shows that are perfect for first-time theatergoers. The New Victory has a pair of plotless spectacles, one acrobatic, the other urban dance, and Making Books Sing and TADA! Youth Theater are adapting popular kids' books by Eileen Spinelli and Ezra Jack Keats. Plus the New York Children's Theater Festival returns for its second year on the Upper West Side, and the tenth annual International Toy Theater Festival takes place in Brooklyn. The one thing all of these shows have in common? You can take the kids to see them without dipping into their college fund—most are $20 or under and one is even FREE.

12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Things to do with kids: 12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Along with the mild weather comes a fresh crop of outdoor festivals, street fairs and carnivals, big annual favorites like two of our April Go List picks, the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as smaller community happenings.

These spring fests are a great way to entertain your family for just a few bucks—sometimes even for FREE. And the activities are really diverse: Introduce the kids to old-fashioned games, celebrate planet Earth, chow down on homemade treats or watch live performances by kiddie bands, puppet troupes and more. Plus, these events aren't just fun, they foster community by bringing folks together to support a school, playground, cultural institution or common cause.

Festival season doesn't kick off until this weekend but you can start planning right now. Here are 12 awesome events to put in your April calendar.

Free Halloween Parades for New York City Kids 2012

Things to do with kids: Free Halloween Parades for New York City Kids 2012

Due to Hurricane Sandy, most parades on Wednesday, October 31 have been canceled, even the huge annual Village Halloween Parade. A few are still going on, but some we can't confirm. If in doubt, assume it has been canceled!

Everybody loves a parade, which means we're all absolutely smitten with Halloween parades. While we think every family should take the kids to the big Greenwich Village Halloween Parade at least once, it can be pretty scary. It's always insanely crowded and loud, and many of the costumes are risqué, gory or in poor taste (which we happen to love, but we realize not every parent feels that way).

If you're ready to watch it, the parade starts at 7pm on October 31 and winds its way up Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street. (Plan to arrive much earlier though if you want to snag a good viewing spot.) But if your family isn't up for the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade just yet, there are plenty of smaller, kid-friendly NYC neighborhood parades, and many are part of larger fun-filled Halloween festivals. We've rounded up 19 of these community-driven Halloween processions for families to watch or march in, and most of them are FREE. If you don't live in a great trick-or-treating area, these parades are also a wonderful way to hunt for candy in another community. And check out our Halloween Fun Guide for even more seasonal fun.

Free Dumbo Arts Festival: Children's Museum of the Arts Debuts Cool Hands-on Activities for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Free Dumbo Arts Festival: Children's Museum of the Arts Debuts Cool Hands-on Activities for NYC Kids

Brooklyn's Dumbo neighborhood is full of funky, family-friendly art experiences all year-round. But every September, the area's creative spirit explodes onto the streets as part of the three-day Dumbo Arts Festival. Although this free fest isn't specifically aimed at families, most of it is kid-friendly, and over the past few years the organizers have added a bunch of hands-on activities for children to the lineup, making it even more enticing.

This year, the fest takes place Friday, September 28 to Sunday, September 30 (yes, the same weekend as the equally awesome World Maker Faire. Terrible timing!) and there are a lot of new attractions for families. We're particularly excited to check out the brand-new Art Village, a section of interactive projects being curated by the Children's Museum of the Arts. We've got the scoop on this new attraction and all of the other cool things to do with kids at this year's Dumbo Arts Festival.

NYC Bookstores for Kids: Best Independent Bookshops with Children's Activities

Things to do with kids: NYC Bookstores for Kids: Best Independent Bookshops with Children's Activities

With the awesome annual Brooklyn Book Festival coming up this Sunday, we figured it would be a great time to highlight some of our favorite independent New York City bookstores that cater to kids. Because as much as we love Barnes & Noble, the ubiquitous chain doesn't enchant or inspire in quite the same way as a small homey bookshop, packed to the rafters with eclectic titles and staffed with book lovers who know regulars' names and tastes.

Although there are only a handful of dedicated children's bookshops in NYC (Books of Wonder and Bank Street Bookstore, we're looking at you!), there are a number of non-chain bookstores that have impressive kids' sections. Plus these unique lit havens often host events for kids—not just storytimes, but author readings, writing workshops and other interactive activities for burgeoning bookworms. So what are you waiting for? Get reading!

Fall Festivals, Fairs, Carnivals and Celebrations for NYC Kids September 2012

Things to do with kids: Fall Festivals, Fairs, Carnivals and Celebrations for NYC Kids September 2012

Summer break may be over but just because the kids are going back to school doesn't mean you can't continue having lots of family fun. Some of New York City's best annual events take place in September including free family favorites like the West Side County Fair, the Medieval Festival in Fort Tryon Park and Children's Day at the South Street Seaport.

There are also celebrations that aren't aimed at families but have plenty of kid appeal, including Little Italy's Feast of San Gennaro, the multidisciplinary Dumbo Arts Festival and the mind-blowing Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science, which we rave about every year.

We've got the scoop on all of these plus 11 other shindigs, 17 in total! So mark your calendar: You don't want to miss these fun and mostly free festivals and celebrations.

6 Free NYC Public Art Displays Kids Will Love

6 Free NYC Public Art Displays Kids Will Love

It's only been three months since we last rounded up NYC public art displays kids will love. But we've come across so many cool new ones this summer, we couldn't wait any longer to share.

These engaging installations in parks, plazas and other public spaces are a great way to expose your kids to world-class art without setting foot in a museum. Plus, they're all FREE (well, to be totally accurate, one requires a MetroCard swipe). Bonus: The five public art displays in Manhattan are all on the 6 subway line, which makes for a fun East Side art trek. (We saw them all in one afternoon.)

Best New York City Views: 10 Spots to See and Photograph NYC

Things to do with kids: Best New York City Views: 10 Spots to See and Photograph NYC

Visitors come to New York City from the world over to eat our pizza, feel our energy and marvel at our spectacular views. But even for us locals, NYC is an awe-inspiring sight (we just need to remember to slow down and take it in every once in a while).

While tourists routinely flock to the Empire State Building or the Top of the Rock to literally look down on the city, there are less well known vantage points that also offer incredible views of NYC, including parks, promenades, museums and a tram. So grab your camera and get ready to fall in love with New York City for the first time—or all over again.
