What We're Reading

Me
200908230839.jpg

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

Brooklyn Kids Guide

With the combination of its bucolic, tree-lined streets and kid amenities that seriously threaten Manhattan's claim to having the best of everything, Brooklyn is, perhaps, the most family friendly borough in New York City. DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights, Ft Greene, Park Slope and Williamsburg are just a few of the hot family neighborhoods. If you're exploring Brooklyn, you don't want to miss the Brooklyn Children's Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and the Brooklyn Culture Trolley can help you get there. Explore all that Brooklyn has to offer here, for inspiration to get more out of the real thing.

The Nutcracker Ballet: 10 Holiday Shows for New York City Kids

The Nutcracker ballet, as beautiful as it is, can be a bit much for little kids to take in. To get them to experience the magic and wonder of this timeless classic, or for a different twist for the kid who's seen the Nutcracker a bunch of times, opt to attend a less traditional version of the show—there’s a whole bunch happening in the city. They are usually shorter, less expensive and more fun, but still have that Nutcracker charm that will keep adults wide-eyed, too.

"The Invisible Dog" Exhibit Art Workshops

Submitted by mommy on November 12, 2009 - 9:41pm.
When:  from Nov 14 2009 - 1:00pm to Nov 14 2009 - 1:00pm
Where:  Invisible Dog 51 Bergen Street, Brooklyn NY

The latest group exhibition produced by No Longer Empty, “The Dog” is a show “out of nothing” in a warmly decrepit out-of-use belt factory on Bergen Street in Brooklyn. The show presents a multitude of site-specific works reflecting both the history of the space and the profound beauty of the Invisible Dog. A rift on the 70’s gag, it’s a void object waiting for creative minds and hands to bring it to life.

Here in the factory, artists grabbed the many trimmings, reels of fabric, leather and other materials and transformed them into something new. The artist duo Steven and William created a “chandelier” of abandoned belt buckles. Guerra del la Paz amassed tons of discarded clothing, one color at a time. Here, la Paz’s “trashy” tribute becomes an imposing, yurt-shaped spectral prism. In the neighborhood spirit, Tom Sanford brings Jonathan Lethem’s novel “Motherless Brooklyn”-- which takes place on this block, to life via a fantastic, larger than life mural. Even the freight elevator is transformed: here, Giuseppe Stampone takes us on a trip from Hell to Heaven al Dante.

Saturday November 14th at 1pm, NLE and Claire's Creative Adventures will offer one or two workshop sessions for children and their parents. Children will get an hour and half tour and hands on experience of the current NLE exhibition. The multiple hands-on projects are inspired by the current exhibition and the remnants of belt materials at the Invisible Dog.

Each session is limited to ten students. First session is at 1pm. $20 per child. The Nov 14th sessions are conducted at Invisible Dog 51 Bergen Street, Brooklyn NY. Please RSVP to mark your interest in this workshop and to receive future kids program notifications.

Ice Skating Rinks in New York City

Ice Skating Rinks in New York City

There are lots of places to go ice skating in New York if you don't mind waiting on long lines or skating shoulder to shoulder with rowdy teenagers. We've picked out the best indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks in New York City where you can avoid the lines and the crowds (at least some of the time). All of these places offer ice skating lessons and ice skating birthday parties and almost all of them even offer hockey. Check each website link for additional information.

Celebrate 40 Years of Sesame Street and Get a Limited Edition Library Card

Celebrate 40 Years of Sesame Street and Get a Limited Edition Library Card

If you haven't noticed, Sesame Street has been celebrating its 40th Birthday. And it's been quite a celebration. They've gotten a street named after them and Google has been doing cute Sesame Street artwork on their homepage. But I think the coolest thing is happening at the Brooklyn Public Library where they are having some special events and kids can get a very special library card.

DUMBO Kite Flying Society

Submitted by mommy on November 6, 2009 - 12:58am.
When:  from Nov 7 2009 - 10:00am to Nov 7 2009 - 10:00am
Where:  Brooklyn Bridge Park at the foot of Main St, Brooklyn
DUMBO Kite Flying Society! Don’t ask our members the secrets to building the world’s best kites. We think most of them will be under ten years old and might be flying their first kite, and besides, no one’s telling. If we told you, you’d miss the fun. Besides we’re not founding the grandest society to ever plaster itself across the DUMBO sky for nothing. Introducing: the DUMBO Kite Flying Society. DKFS members arise on the first Saturday morning of every month to ascend and soar between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, glide over the East River, and vie for the titles of biggest kite, smallest kite, worst kite, longest flying kite and most improved kite. DKFS members salute innovative kite engineers of all skills provided they possess the will and fortitude of kite fliers who have come before; such as Alexander Graham Bell, Benjamin Franklin, the Wright Brothers, and Submarine Spies, mariners who lofted antennas into the sky to talk to the folks back home. Second only to birds (poor Icarus!), kites were the first inspiration to explore reality of lifting man into the sky. Come fly a kite! Starter kites provided! Certificate of membership and kite flying license’s will be issued, by us. Read about the DUMBO Kite Flying Society in the New York Daily News! First Saturday of every Month, Brooklyn Bridge Park* (*That's the City Park at the foot of Main Street, not the State Park, the State Park has rules and they won’t let you fly a kite. We told them to go fly a kite.) galapagosartspace.com" Read more »
