Time to spring forward into March with a whole lot of green, some self-care and snacking, superb screen time, and even a little madness.

March is Women’s History Month, and it happens to kick off on Mardi Gras this year— that combination of girl power and a party spirit is the mood for this month. All our picks either bring a sense of party and playfulness or they’re self-care, post-play pick-me-ups. With the state of the world, that's right where I want to live. A few things on this list are brand new, but several are just new to me; they’re recommendations from friends, co-workers, and loved ones that I’ve been trying out for the last month and become obsessed with. There’s even a pick from each of my kids.

Read on to discover a way to take 20 minutes for yourself, your new favorite breakfast treat, a family TV show I’ve been waiting for for years, and more.

1. Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls

This isn’t a new book; it’s not even new to me. But I did recently pick it up again from our bookshelf, and we’ve been reading selections at dinner (my kids are too old for bedtime stories, so they tell me). If you’ve got young kids, these stories about strong women make for perfect bedtime reading this Women’s History Month. If you’ve got big kids, the book is a great jumping-off point to talk about how these women are relevant today, and how we view their stories and struggles through a modern lens.

2. Collagen Essence Full Face Facial Mask Sheet

Speaking of women: indulge the women in your life with a face mask. I got these for Christmas, and they've become a weekly ritual. I love a fancy product, but these masks are under $1 each, and they’re just as effective as the pricey masks. I think anything that makes you lie down for 20 minutes and relax is bound to soften wrinkles. Also, when you have them on, you look a little scary, and you may find family members avoiding you. Score! Because they come in a 16 pack, you can keep several for yourself and also give some to the women in your life who deserve a break.

3. Fair Play Deck

One of my girlfriends recommended this deck of chore cards, as it’s making its way through the parents in her school. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t felt, at some point, that they’re taking on a disproportionate amount of the invisible chores. We didn’t use these cards the way they were intended, as a way to re-divide household chores. My family used this to jumpstart a conversation about feeling seen and appreciated. My kids, my husband, and I all picked out cards that represented chores and tasks we feel like we do that no one recognizes. If a card didn’t exist, we created one. Not only did we have a great conversation where everyone really got to talk about how they felt, I walked away from our first time using the cards having delegated/shared my least favorite chore (meal planning) with everyone in the family.

4. Green muffins for St. Patrick’s Day

My daughter insisted this be a pick for March: our family tradition for breakfast on St. Patrick’s Day is these spinach muffins with a glass of green milk. They’re based on a Weelicious recipe, and even though they’re low-fat (applesauce) and have a helping of spinach, they taste like cake—my whole family adores them and requests them several times a year. But we always make them on March 17, and I hope they’ll become a tradition for your family, too.

5. Bokksu subscription snack box

This monthly subscription Japanese snack box is my son’s recommendation. Having included my daughter’s pick, I was parentally obligated to include one from my son. Luckily, he had a brilliant new discovery ready: Bokksu is a monthly subscription box filled with different Japanese snacks and treats every month. Having tried one of the snacks that a friend brought to school, Jacob asked if we could try it. We’re only on our second box, but it’s a huge hit. Each box has cookies, gummies, savory snacks, and at least one tea. They’re really fun to add to school lunches for a surprise treat, and it’s been great for getting us all to try new things.

These are basically Legos made out of wood, that kids can color in with markers. I’ve worked in the parenting space for a long time, and before that, I worked at eToys. It’s rare that I discover a toy I haven’t seen before, and rarer still that I fall head over heels in love with one. This is that toy. I was looking for a Christmas gift for my cousin’s youngest child, and stumbled upon these little bricks. Since Christmas, I’ve bought 4 sets, for kids of all ages. If Little Wonder & Co. is new to you, you’re in for a treat. All the toys and dolls sold at this mom-run company are inclusive, eco-friendly, and sustainable.

7. March Madness — Starts March 15

Sports nuts or no (I am, my kids aren’t) March Madness is one of the most exciting sporting events of the year. You know why? Everyone likes to win, and filling out a bracket gives you a reason to cheer for the teams you pick to go all the way. No sporting knowledge required, just tell your kids what the teams' mascots are, what the school colors are, and what city they’re located in. Can a Tarheel beat the Fighting Irish? Does orange top powder blue? You can print out your bracket here, and let your kids fill it out.

8. Turning Red premieres on Disney+ on March 11

Pixar! If every  month could have a Pixar movie, I’d be happy. The movie tells the story of Mei, who is hitting puberty. Like Inside Out, Turning Red takes kids into the world of emotions, and looks like a perfect starting point for family discussions on how to stay true to yourself while navigating being cool and learning to have some independence from parents. Get those tissues ready!

9. Theodosia premieres on HBO Max on March 10

Have you ever read a book and thought—this would make a great movie? I started reading the Theodosia Throckmorton series when the first book came out in 2008 and instantly had that feeling. Well, 14 years later, it’s a TV show, and I can’t wait to watch it with my kids. It’s got an intrepid tween protagonist, Egyptology, the supernatural, and a fight to save the world. What more could you want?

10. The Sill

Jody, our NYC editor, sent me preview pictures of Diana's visit to this new plant store and coffee shop in Park Slope. The pictures made me want to move to Park Slope. If you live in NYC, I highly recommend visiting. If you don’t, like me, you can visit the online store and stock up on plants, which is what I did. I’m known in my family for loving plants and having a black thumb, so I really love the easy-to-follow Plant Care Guide that comes with each plant. Even I can follow the directions, and my String of Hearts plant is thriving. But, it’s only been a couple of weeks...
