14th Street Y KOL Program

The 14th Street Y is proud to welcome children with special needs into the 14Y community. The 14th Street Y’s KOL Program is a weekend recreational program for children and adolescents (ages 4-17) who are on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum or have related developmental differences, such as ADHD and language delays. 

KOL cultivates a supportive community among parents and caregivers who have a space to come together and share resources and advice. Offerings include activities ranging from soccer and capoeira to music and art, all while promoting social skills development and relationship building.

Brooklyn Child Therapy

Bilingual and Bicultural child and adolescent psychotherapist in private practice. This practice specializes in helping young children develop coping skills and social skills through play therapy. Commonwealth Learning Center is an independent nonprofit organization that provides 1-to-1 tutoring and educational evaluation services to students in grades K-12. They specialize in working with individuals who learn differently, including those with dyslexia, ADHD, and executive functioning challenges.

Instructors create a customized plan to meet the specific needs of each student and continually adjust their teaching style to suit the learner. Programs offered include (but are not limited to): 

  • Reading (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, Project Read Reading Comprehension, Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Programming, Nancibell Visualizing & Verbalizing)
  • Writing (Project Read Written Expression)

Their goal is to build upon your child’s strengths to promote further independence in daily activities of life, thus empowering every child step by step. They take a holistic approach in evaluating your child to understand how occupational therapy can most positively impact his/her life. In conjunction with caregivers, teachers, and health practitioners, they will take part in connecting the dots and determining a treatment plan that can address the immediate as well as long-term needs of every child.

For NYC clients, Connect the Dots provides services on-site in their sensory integration clinic and at your child's home or school, and they accept early intervention, CPSE, and RSA mandates. For NJ clients, they are accepting only private clients at this time for home and community services.

EBL Coaching - Special Needs

EBL Coaching specializes in one-on-one home tutoring for students in grades pre-K through 12 in reading, writing, math, study skills, and test preparation. Each student is assessed and then matched with one of EBL's learning specialists who is trained in the methods most appropriate for that child. EBL offers specialized instruction for students with ADHD, dyslexia, learning disabilities, and executive functioning challenges using research-based, multi-sensory methods. Sessions can be held either at EBL's Upper East Side learning center or in the home. EBL offers 3-week intensive small-group summer programs in reading, writing, math, organization, and executive functioning skills.

EBL Director Dr. Emily Levy is a world-renowned education expert who has written the Strategies for Study Success study skills student workbook series and the Flags and Stars Orton Gillingham workbook program, both of which are used in schools nationwide.
