MPsquared.gifIn my last MP2 post, I wrote about why every parent should have an iPhone. I talked about a lot of great features, but I didn't even really scratch the surface of all the apps that are available for the phone. Of course, there are more than 10 great apps for parents, but this round-up will get you started with some fun, useful and just silly iPhone apps, particularly for parents. (By the way, most of these work with the iPod Touch also)

Scribble (FREE) —Lets kids (or parents) draw with their finger right on the screen and then shake to erase, like an etch-a-sketch. Great for little kids.

Bubbles (FREE) — Make and play with bubbles. Perfect for distracting toddlers.

Super Monkey Ball ($9.99)— Of course there are a gazillion DS style games for the iPhone, but this is my family's favorite, kids and adults included.

Jott (FREE)— Record and send yourself transcribed messages via email. The ultimate mommy brain aide.

Flashmath ($0.99)— Quick math problems with multiple difficulty settings from Kindergarten through 5th Grade. A math tutor in your pocket to make up for that "new math" they teach our kids.

Things ($9.99) — A smart organization tool that helps you manage your to-do list, notes, projects and more.

Food Additives ($3.99) —Find information about 450+ food additives that might be unsafe to you or your child's health, ranked by risk factors.

Apps for pregnant and new moms:

Expecting ($4.99) — This app not only tracks your due date and OB appointments, but gives you tips and helpful facts relevant to each week of your pregnancy, plus a checklist and contraction timer for the big day.

Baby Names ($4.99) — Let's you search, research and share potential baby names and then create, edit and reorder your favorites list.

Baby Log ($4.99) Records diaper changes, feedings, naps, and bathing and can be exported to an Excel spreadsheet for those truly alpha moms.

What are your favorite apps? Leave them in the comments below.

AddTap - Unique Math App for Young Children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on August 17, 2010 - 8:30pm.

Another great, very fun app for young children is AddTap. The user must answer 10, 15, or 20 basic addition problems as quickly as possible but to answer the equations the user must combine numbers from the keypad to input the answer. It's great for quizzing the younger ones on addition problems but it seems to be much more interactive than simple flash card apps and more effective. There's also another mode that makes competing against friends very easy.

It's called My Baby Day, and it informs your partner and family when you are in labor and also has a GPS service that will locate where you are for your partner or you family and friends. When you deliver the baby it will also send out birth announcements to your family and friends. Please feel free to check it out.

Sleeping With the Laundry: Notes from the Mommy Track

Submitted by MoxieMom (not verified) on May 23, 2010 - 2:27pm.

Ok! Full disclosure. I love this app because it's my app. It's a collection of my syndicated column for the last 10 years. So really it's about you. It's about all the funny humorous things that happen to us as moms. My stories are really everymom's stories. Sales are going well. I'm figuring out how to market it with social media. Which I'm happy to share all I've learned, send me an email at editor (a) moxiemom.com.

The best part about how this app works so well for moms is that you can set it down! When you come back to it, you're still at the same story.

Plus if you're having a bad day, search on a topic like potty training or marriage, (yes sometimes that can be the cause of a bad day) and read some stories from moms like you.

Anyway. Please check it out. Thanks for asking to list our favorites.

App for parents to send reminders to kids

Submitted by Ian (not verified) on May 2, 2010 - 11:58pm.

ToldTwice is a basic but very effective app - use it to send reminders to your child's cell phone as SMS text messages.

The app has canned messages like "clean your room", "do homework", "call mom", etc.

Very simple yet a great way for busy parents to remind their kids of future events.

A great new app for parents with babies. Baby Safe Monitor is a new app that turns your iphone into the ultimate baby monitor with full video/audio anywhere anytime. Unlike all the other apps that either just redirect messages with noise or use local network, this app is the only one you can watch live and even take photos or video of your baby from anywhere in the world. Night vision, everything. You can either use your own compatible camera, lap top or buy the awesome recommended baby safe camera. Very expensive app US$39 but when compared to baby monitors on the market for what it does its GREAT value.

Don't overlook the obvious

Submitted by Elsworth (not verified) on January 8, 2010 - 4:11pm.

Don't overlook the obvious -- Moms and dads have emergencies and heaven knows so do the little ones strapped in the back seat. That's when this husband turns to the Yellow Pages app. It finds you the nearest businesses to you based on your exact location. It is really handy when someone "neeeeds toooo gooooo toooo the bafroooom real bad daddy" and you are left trying to find the nearest fastfood joint. Just enter in you rown search term or use any of the presuggested ones and the app sorts your results with contact info and GPS for you. It even has reviews.
Just got back from a vacation to Hawaii with the fam and this app saved our bacon on a couple of occasions (including an emergeny trip to the pharmacist to refill a lost prescription)
It's free and absolutely one of my top 5 daddy apps

Something to keep the kids occupied during long car journeys - just released in time for Christmas....Rockford's Rock Opera is a unique audio visual story, rich in music, psychedelic soundscapes, CGI animation and beautiful pictures.
Suitable for all ages (4+), there’s simply nothing else like it.

Created by Sweetapple and scripted by BBC respected writer, Steve Punt, it’s a story about animals, about extinction and the effect man is having on the planet. But it’s a heart warming and hopeful message (endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund)

Over 1,000,000 people have streamed or downloaded this story from the main website in the past year-but now this our FREE app really brings the story to life.

It also has a feature that if my child ever gets lost I can send a flyer directly to law enforcement or anyone else with an up to date photo and current statistics of my child. I used it the other day when I took my son's scout troop to the zoo. I had to chaperone 6 other boys. It made me feel safe knowing I had all of their info and photos with me. They have a website too mkidsid.com. Great app. Definitely worth the money!

If you are looking for an educational game for your toddler or preschooler, then check out the iPgone app "I See Ewe". I originally wrote it for my then 20 month old daughter when I noticed she found the iPhone as interesting as daddy did, but there were not many good iPhone apps targeted at her age group.

I See Ewe helps kids learn to recognize shapes and animals and to start learning some simple sight words. The app accomplishes this through two simple yet engaging games. The first game, "Learn Shapes", presents your child with a number of cards, each containing a different shape, and then asks your child to find a specific shape amongst them. The second game, "Match Shapes", challenges your child to turn over cards two at a time to find a pair of matching cards.

You can find I See Ewe at the iTunes app store or at
