This year, Brooklyn-based artist Mincho Vega returns as BCM’s guest curator for a celebration of the traditions and histories of our ancestors from Latin America.

A Community Ofrenda
Leave an offering at the Museum’s ofrenda, designed by Mincho Vega, to help the community remember, learn about, and celebrate the loved ones you’ve lost.

Aztec Ceremonial Dance
The Mexica people, like many other Native nations from the Americas, have a rich culture centered on the principle of “interconnectedness.” Join Cetiliztli Nauhcampa for a memorable ceremony filled with Aztec dance and song, and take part in forming a community circle.

Pan de Muerto: Making & Tasting
Join the bakers from Brooklyn’s Don Paco Lopez Panadería for a special lesson on pan de muerto, or “bread of the dead,” and discover the delicious taste of this Mexican sweet bread. Then head on over to the Museum’s World Brooklyn exhibit to explore a child-size recreation of the Don Paco Lopez Panadería and other real shops from throughout the borough where kids can role play as bakers, shopkeepers, and customers.

Mixteca Chocolate-Making Workshop
Explore the indigenous roots of chocolate at a workshop led by Marcela Alatorre of Mixteca. Learn about the benefits and significance of cacao to the Nahuatl culture, then try grinding cacao beans to make artisanal chocolate tablets! Mixteca is a Sunset Park-based community organization that seeks to empower Mexican and Latin-American immigrants of the New York area and beyond.

Barrilete-Making Workshop
Learn about barriletes, a Guatemalan kite-making tradition, with Mayan artist Norma Pereira of Ixmucane’s Artisan, then craft kites using colorful tissue paper and bamboo.

Storytelling Performances include storytelling by Yadira De La Riva that brings Day of the Dead traditions to life through picture books and interactive activities.
