Uptown NYC Neighborhood Guide

World-class museums, amazing parks and playgrounds, family-friendly neighborhoods like the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side, and tons of kid-centric services and amenities make Uptown Manhattan a fabulous place to live or visit. The American Museum of Natural History and the Children's Museum of Manhattan are perennial family favorites, but Museum Mile institutions like the Metropolitan are also great for kids and often offer free with admission family programs. Want to play outside? Central Park could keep you busy for a lifetime, but you don't want to miss all of the great playgrounds in Riverside Park. Hopefully the neighborhood guides, articles and other resources on this page will help spark your adventures.

NYC Summer Camps for Preschoolers: Half-Day and Partial Week Junior Summer Programs

Things to do with kids: NYC Summer Camps for Preschoolers: Half-Day and Partial Week Junior Summer Programs

Summer camp is more than just a fun and enriching experience for young children. It also marks an important step in their development as they get to test out their independence and, in the case of commuter camps, travel outside the city to enjoy outdoor activities in nature.

As exciting as that first-time camp experience is, it can also be scary (perhaps more so for parents than kids) since it's outside everyone's comfort zone. Even if you find a program that offers a safe and stimulating environment for younger kids, parents may worry than their preschoolers aren't yet ready for full days or weeks of camp.

Every summer, readers email us asking if we know about summer programs that offer short days or sessions where tots can try out day camp and see how they like it. We asked our friends at the American Camp Association of New York and New Jersey to recommend some camps that fit the bill and still have openings for summer 2013. If you need more information, the ACA of NY and NJ also offers free camp consultations with their experts.

You can find out about other awesome summer programs in our Camp Guide.

Special Needs Dance Classes for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Special Needs Dance Classes for NYC Kids

A few weeks ago I wrote about special needs music classes for kids in the five boroughs. Today I'm spotlighting dance programs for children with special needs in NYC.

Just as organizations like Daniel’s Music Foundation changed my son’s life and allowed him to be able to get up on stage in front of people and sing, there are dance programs that help children with special needs do the same with dance. There are a variety of dance classes and summer camps throughout NYC for children with special needs. Here are some of our favorites:

Where to See Macy's 4th of July Fireworks in New York City 2013

Things to do with kids: Where to See Macy's 4th of July Fireworks in New York City 2013

On Thursday, July 4, crowds will flock to Manhattan's West Side to watch Macy's 4th of July Fireworks light up the night sky in honor of Independence Day. More than 40,000 fireworks will burst forth from four barges floating on the Hudson River, synchronized to an eclectic soundtrack of patriotic standards, and classic and current pop songs that were all handpicked by Grammy Award winner Usher. In fact, he even helped influence the design of the fireworks!

While it may seem like the holiday is a long way off, it's actually just three weeks away. Tickets for paid viewing options, like 4th of July fireworks cruises and watching from the deck of the Intrepid, are already on sale and going fast. Of course you don't need to spend a penny see the sparklers, but there are some important things to know before you go. We've got the scoop on how to find the best places to watch Macy's 4th of July Fireworks with your family.

Free Outdoor Movies for NYC Kids this Summer

Things to do with kids: Free Outdoor Movies for NYC Kids this Summer

Enjoying a free alfresco film is a rite of summer in New York City. Even if you go to see a flick you've watched a million times at home, it's a totally different experience viewing it in the open air alongside a couple hundred other movie lovers. It ends up being a pretty thrilling communal event.

A few outdoor movie series, like RiverFlicks for Kids in the West Village, are aimed specifically at children. But even the big grown-up ones like Bryant Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park's Syfy Movies With A View include a family-friendly screening or two. Plus this year, the Central Park Conservancy is asking New Yorkers to pick which movies they want to see for the park's annual August outdoor film festival!

Movies usually begin at dusk between 8-8:30pm but make sure you arrive early: The well known series fill up fast. Plus, sometimes there is cool, pre-movie entertainment. So pack a picnic, bring your blanket, sit back, relax and enjoy the show at one of these outdoor summer movie series in NYC.

Free Outdoor Kids' Summer Music Concert Series in New York City Parks

Things to do with kids: Free Outdoor Kids' Summer Music Concert Series in New York City Parks

While lots of New York City's fantastic summer performance series are kid appropriate, children know when an event isn't aimed directly at them. So while we totally encourage you to bring your preschoolers to hear the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera perform in Central Park, make sure you take them to a few outdoor concerts just for them, too.

Happily, that's easy to do in this town. NYC's kiddie music scene seems to get bigger every year. In fact, this season, there are almost as many free outdoor performance series for kids as there are for adults! We’ve got the scoop on the coolest under(play)ground concerts in New York City's parks, playgrounds and plazas. So grab a blanket, score a good spot and enjoy the tunes, weather permitting.

Free Outdoor Summer Music Festivals and Concerts in New York City

Things to do with kids: Free Outdoor Summer Music Festivals and Concerts in New York City

Although some New York City outdoor music and culture series are created specifically with children in mind, there are lots of grown-up ones that families can enjoy, too. At these wonderful alfresco events—most of which take place in parks and plazas—families can pack a picnic, stake out a spot, lay down a blanket and soak up some culture at no cost. Don't worry if the kids aren't totally into it; sit along the perimeter and let them run around, dance and play and they'll be happy.

While many of the series including SummerStage, Celebrate Brooklyn! and Lincoln Center Out of Doors host dedicated family days, it's worth browsing their full schedules. There's no minimum age to enjoy jazz, classical or rock, right?

We've rounded up the city's best free outdoor music and performance series and highlighted the events we think will be of particular interest to families.
