Chinatown Kids Neighborhood Guide

Chinatown is one of New York City's busiest and most colorful neighborhoods. Although visitors flock here for popular annual celebrations like the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival and the Lunar New Year Parade and Festival, it's a fantastic destinations for families year-round. You can eat at one of the many wonderful dim sum restaurants, browse the cool (and usual inexpensive) wares in all of the shops, try the exotic flavors at the amazing Chinatown Ice Cream Factory (No. 57 on our list of 100 Things to Do in NYC with Kids Before They Grow Up), run around at the state-of-the-art Hester Street Playground and learn about the immigrant experience at the Museum of Chinese in America. We hope the articles, map and other resources on this page will inspire many fun-filled trips to Chinatown.

Experience NYC in a New Way with a Stray Boots Interactive Walking Tour & Scavenger Hunt

Experience NYC in a New Way with a Stray Boots Interactive Walking Tour & Scavenger Hunt

As an intrepid Mommy Poppins blogger, I am always on the lookout for cool new ways to experience New York City with my eight-year-old son. While we're certainly up for exploring neighborhoods on our own, when I heard about the do-it-yourself mobile tours offered by Stray Boots, I thought they sounded like fun.

A Stray Boots outing is equal parts walking tour and scavenger hunt. You just download the app on your smartphone, head to the starting location and go. But the entire route isn't given to you up front: At each stop, you need to complete challenges and answer questions in order to progress to the next destination. Along the way, the app shares historical tidbits and facts about the places you visit and the surrounding area.

Stray Boots started in NYC and now offers tours in multiple cities all over the country. For our first one, my son and I and two of his friends decided on the Chinatown and Little Italy tour. While Stray Boots tours aren't specifically aimed at families, we had a great time. Best of all, even though we'd all been to Chinatown and Little Italy before, during the tour we got to see the neighborhoods in an entirely new way.

Play Pac-Man and Other Retro Video Games at NYC Museums and Family Arcades

Things to do with kids: Play Pac-Man and Other Retro Video Games at NYC Museums and Family Arcades

Your kids are intimately familiar with all of the different Angry Birds and their powers, and know exactly where to Cut the Rope to feed the little monster. But can they name all four of the ghosts in Pac-Man? Doubtful... but we bet you can! (Say it with me: Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde). Since today's kids are used to touch screen games (or games that require no touching at all), getting the chance to jerk around joystick on a vintage video game console is a real novelty. Trouble is, where do you find those these days? Why, in a museum of course.

The Museum of the Moving Image and the Museum of Modern Art have both amassed old-school arcade video game collections, and you can actually play many of them in two new exhibits. And if you worry that a museum isn't the optimal setting for game playing (which often involves a lot of whooping and cheering), we've also found a handful of old-fashioned family-friendly arcades (and no, not one is a Chuck E. Cheese's or Dave & Buster's).

Chinese New Year for NYC Kids: Celebrate Lunar New Year with Free Parades and Festivals

Things to do with kids: Chinese New Year for NYC Kids: Celebrate Lunar New Year with Free Parades and Festivals

Chinese New Year is one of our favorite times in New York City—it's a great way to get immersed in another culture without buying an airplane ticket. Although the Year of the Snake officially begins on Sunday, February 10, Lunar New Year celebrations start in early February and continue throughout the month with many different Asian cultures and traditions represented.

This is a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy Chinese food, and learn about Chinese culture and stories. And with different Lunar New Year parades in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, it's also a great opportunity to go out and explore a new-to-you neighborhood.

From beloved annual events like Chinatown's parade and firecracker celebration, to brand-new ways to ring in the Lunar New Year, here are the best ways to celebrate Chinese New Year with kids in NYC. Bonus: Lots of them are free.

Drop-in Indoor Play Spaces in Manhattan: Places for NYC Kids to Play Inside

Things to do with kids: Drop-in Indoor Play Spaces in Manhattan: Places for NYC Kids to Play Inside

[UPDATED: DECEMBER 11, 2012]

Although we recently updated our roundups of drop-in play spaces in Queens and Brooklyn, it had been a while since we overhauled our list of Manhattan play spaces—so long in fact that a few of our old picks are now closed. But don't worry: There are still plenty of spots where young kids can run around freely indoors without signing up for a pricey annual membership.

We found ten awesome indoor places in Manhattan that currently offer open play hours. Some allow you to drop in while others ask that you make reservations, but none require any kind of long-term financial commitment. From traditional preschooler play spaces like Chelsea Piers' Little Athletes Exploration Center to more offbeat romping spots like the animal-centric Art Farm in the City, here's the scoop on the best places to play indoors in Manhattan.

Museum of Chinese in America: A Fascinating Look at the Immigrant Experience

Museum of Chinese in America: A Fascinating Look at the Immigrant Experience

We continue our spotlight on Chinatown with a post about one of the neighborhood's leading cultural institutions: the Museum of Chinese in America. Originally founded in 1980, MoCA moved into its current Centre Street home in 2009. Designed by artist Maya Lin (who created Washington D.C.'s iconic Vietnam Veterans Memorial), the museum is small but striking, and showcases the history, heritage, culture and experiences of Chinese-Americans through technology, photographs, art and relics. MoCA also regularly offers programs for kids and families.

My husband is Chinese-American and our daughter is biracial, yet we had never visited MoCA as a family, so I was very excited to go on this outing with them.

Destination Playground: Hester Street Playground

Destination Playground: Hester Street Playground

As we mentioned in our weekly wrap up on Friday, we'll be spotlighting one NYC neighborhood a month in a series of posts. That way we can really explore an area, and let families know about all of its kid-friendly attractions. We decided to start with Chinatown because it's such a fascinating and vibrant place. Last week, one of our bloggers took her family on a walking tour of the nabe. Today, we're taking a closer look at the Hester Street Playground, which is the premier play spot in the area.

My husband grew up in Chinatown in the '80s, and he remembers when the spot was a rundown mess of a park. (In fact, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe once said that it "might have been the worst playground in the City of New York.") Thanks to last summer's $5 million renovation, it's now a state-of-the-art Destination Playground for local kids and visitors.

Chinatown with NYC Kids: A Fun Family Tour of This Bustling Downtown Neighborhood

Chinatown with NYC Kids: A Fun Family Tour of This Bustling Downtown Neighborhood

[UPDATED: July 26, 2012]

Since Mommy Poppins started four years ago, we've tried to write about neighborhoods all over the city and not just well known family-friendly areas. What we've found is that any NYC community can be fun for kids—all you need to do is explore. So beginning this month, we're going to highlight one neighborhood a month. October's pick is Chinatown, and this is the first in a series of posts about some of the cool things your family can see and do there.

One of New York City's busiest and most colorful districts, Chinatown hosts popular annual events like the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival and the Lunar New Year Parade and Festival, as well as joint celebrations with its neighbors like the East Meets West Christmas Parade (with Little Italy) and the Egg Rolls and Egg Creams Festival (with the Lower East Side).

But there's no reason to wait for one of those special festivities to visit. Chinatown's got great places for kids to eat, play, look and learn a bit about Chinese culture all year round. One of our writers and her three-year-old son played tourist in Chinatown for a day. Here's what they discovered.
