Philadelphia International Flower Show 2012: A Great Family Day Trip

Philadelphia International Flower Show 2012: A Great Family Day Trip

The annual Philadelphia International Flower Show has been on my bucket list for a long time and this year I decided to cross it off. Last weekend, my family and I drove down to Philly to check out the blooming buds.

Held at the massive Pennsylvania Convention Center every March, the Philadelphia International Flower Show is the world’s largest indoor flower show. This year's edition celebrates Hawaii with amazing displays of the state's tropical flowers and plants. As you can see in our slide show, the exotic blooms and greenery are interspersed with sparkling white sand, crystal pools of water and volcanic rocks, truly stunning sights. Other attractions include culinary demonstrations, a Man Cave, a Family Lounge, awesome eats and shopping, tons of gardening and agriculture workshops, and a huge Hawaiian marketplace featuring flowers and plants, delicious delicacies and indigenous crafts.

The Philadelphia International Flower Show continues through Sunday, March 11 and makes for a wonderful family day trip. Yes, NYC has the orchids at the New York Botanical Garden and Macy's upcoming annual Flower Show, but they can't compare to this incredible display. You'll feel like you took a trip to Hawaii!

Snow Tubing for Kids Near NYC: Tubing in NY, NJ, PA and CT

Things to do with kids: Snow Tubing for Kids Near NYC: Tubing in NY, NJ, PA and CT

[UPDATED: JANUARY 4, 2013]

Sliding down my parents' front lawn is one of my fondest childhood memories. Since we had the steepest hill on the block, all of the neighborhood kids would come over with their sleds. I have tried to recreate those magical days for my son in New York City but the logistics can be challenging—there's rarely enough snow and lugging a sled on the subway is a drag. Plus, where am I supposed to store a sled in my apartment anyway?

That's why every winter, we jump in our car and hit a nearby snow tubing spot. It's a wonderful winter activity that reminds me of those carefree childhood days sledding with friends. No skill is required, and the only things you'll need are a tube, a hill and snow, all of which are provided by the parks. Just dress in warm duds and you are good to go.

We've rounded up 11 ski resorts in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut that offer snow tubing, most less than a two-hour drive from midtown Manhattan.

5 Fun Day Trips From New York City Without A Car

Things to do with kids: 5 Fun Day Trips From New York City Without A Car

[UPDATED: DECEMBER 21, 2012]

For kids, a week off from school is bliss. For parents, it can be a little stressful. My son tends to get a little stir crazy in our over-heated apartment. It is too cold for the playground and every inside attraction is jam-packed. Plus, I really need a break from our monthly trek to the American Museum of Natural History.

Thankfully a car isn't necessary to escape the city for the day. Here are some great day trips guaranteed to entertain the whole gang, no car required! There's no need to battle traffic and arrive stressed when you can kick back and relax on public transit. Plus, it makes getting there part of the adventure and your kids will love it.
