Splurge: CuRious Candy by Cynthia Rowley on the Upper East Side

Splurge: CuRious Candy by Cynthia Rowley on the Upper East Side

There's certainly no shortage of places to indulge in sweet treats on the Upper East Side, but there's always room for one more, right? Especially a sugar spot as cool and unique as CuRious Candy.

The brainchild of high-end fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, CuRious Candy occupies the second floor of her recently opened four-story boutique, and it's not the place to go if you're just looking to pick up a bag of M&M's. In a way, the candy is almost beside the point. From the intriguing entryway, adorned with brambles, foggy mirrors and giant metallic roses, to the fantastical wall mural as you head up the stairs, to the shop's design centerpiece, a white peacock perched on a leafless tree, CuRious Candy is an immersive experience. A visit here is more about experiencing the atmosphere than the actual eating.

NYC Local Shopping Guide for Kids: Toy Stores & Children's Boutiques

There was a time when New York City was filled with quaint ma-and-pa kids' shops selling cute toys, clothes and gear. But over the past few decades, the city has become mall-ified as big national chains have put a lot of those little stores we loved out of business. However, you can still find offbeat, locally owned children's stores as long as you know where to look.

The local stores featured in our NYC Kids Shopping Guide stock unique and often handcrafted playthings and outfits that you won't see on every kid in the playground. Plus, when you buy local, you're supporting your neighbors, community and the environment, so you can feel extra good about your purchase. We've rounded up lots neighborhood favorites on the Upper West Side, in Park Slope and beyond; second-hand stores where you can exchange old stuff for new-to-you treasures; plus a handful of exceptional experience chain stores where you might opt not to spend money, but your kids can play in for free.

Things to do with kids: NYC Pop-Up Shops 2012: 10 Places for Cool Holiday Gifts

In our Shopping Local Holiday Gift Guide, we highlight our favorite places to buy unique gifts in New York City including craft fairs and holiday markets. But we also love browsing the eclectic wares at all of the pop-up shops that appear in NYC at this time of year.

These temporary retail outlets are often (but not always) set up by businesses that don't normally sell goods directly to the public, or don't have stores in NYC.
