Mostly Free & Fun Things to Do this Weekend with Westchester Kids: Parades, Festivals, Village Celebrations & More, Oct. 12-14

It seems like this Columbus Day Weekend in Westchester it’s all about the “towns”...and it’s almost all FREE! On Saturday, you can celebrate Harvest in the Village in Briarcliff Manor and learn about living “green” in Tarrytown at the Eco Fair. The South Salem Fire Department is celebrating its 75th Anniversary by hosting an Open House throughout the village. On Sunday head up to Yorktown for the Fall Festival and Street Fair where you can enjoy a Kidville Concert.

Harrison and Eastchester have events throughout the entire weekend. Harrison residents love their town so much they are celebrating over the entire weekend with "It’s Great to Live in Harrison." The Eastchester Columbus Day Carnival and Parade will bring with it over 10,000 visitors and hosts a magnificent Grucci Fireworks show on Sunday evening. There is also a meatball contest and I’m wondering if that’s a “who makes the best meatballs contest” or a “who can eat the most meatballs contest” – I believe I could be in the running for either!

And, of course, don’t forget about all the fun Halloween events in Westchester and beyond that are going on throughout the entire month of October. I think this weekend we’re going to check out the Scarecrow Invasion at Lyndhurst Castle in Tarrytown and head up to Katonah to get our pumpkins at Muscoot Farm’s Pumpkin Picking Weekend. If I have any energy left, or my sanity, we may take a ride up for Boscobel’s Family Bonfire Night in Garrison and roast some marshmallows.

Acting & Musical Theater Classes for Kids in Westchester

When my son first asked to taking acting classes, I was floored. He was such a shy and timid kid, even as a toddler. I actually asked him if he knew what acting was. He assured me he did and he wanted to take classes so I signed him up. I was surprised and delighted to see my quiet little boy flourish on stage. He became more confident and took to the stage with enthusiasm and excitement that I had never seen in him before.

Acting can be lots of fun and a great way to build public speaking skills and foster teamwork. It's also great to experience seeing a production brought to life and being a part of the process. Westchester has great choices when it comes to acting programs and we've listed them for you here. Instruction ranges from acting and film making to musical theater with dancing and singing incorporated.

Free & Fun Things to Do this Weekend with Westchester Kids: Haunted Houses, Festivals, the Circus & More, Oct. 5 & 6

October brings with it the start of the Halloween season and all month long there are parties, festivals, parades, and haunted houses all around Westchester. My family has already started figuring out our costumes but if you haven’t gotten that far, head out to Katonah on Saturday for a Costume Swap where you give a costume and get a costume. If you don’t have one to swap you can purchase one for only $5.

The Rivertowns are exploding with events that start this weekend like The Great Jack O Lantern Blaze and The Legend Behind the 'Legend'. Dobbs Ferry is shutting down its streets on Saturday for the Dobbs Ferry Festa and Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills is throwing a Harvest Fest.

The Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival and the Great Chappaqua Bake Sale are teaming up for a day full of entertainment for the entire family. The author of the Pinkalicious series will be doing a reading at the bake sale and my kids are really hoping she is accompanied by some pink cupcakes!

For the older kids (unless you want your little ones sleeping with you for the next month), there are plenty of haunted happenings including Horseman’s Hollow and Scared by the Sound.

Gymnastics Classes for Westchester Kids

Kids love to run, jump, flip and play. Not so great when its your sofa, their bed or each other that they're jumping on. Looking for a class to channel that energy into something more constructive? My father was a gymnast in high school and college and was still tumbling on the lawn or in the park up until my teens, much to the delight of my friends (it never got old for me, either). I didn't follow in my father's gymnast footsteps, however when my kids showed an interest, I jumped on the chance to sign them up for classes. Gymnastics can be a great way for kids to exert some energy, learn how to safely jump, flip and roll, increase confidence and discipline and yes, show off to their friends. There are lots of great options for gymnastics in Westchester, and we've rounded them up for you here. For more gymnastics options, see our post on gymnastics classes in Lower Hudson Valley.
