Participants create two-dimensional works that explore their identities in different ways. First, they create a series of quick drawings from observation, practicing their drawing skills. One of their drawings is chosen as a final piece and used as a basis for a mixed-media self-portrait that shows their personality and interests.

Portraits can be entirely abstract mixed-media or more representational, using drawing and collage. Terms such as identity, abstract, and representational are discussed.

Choice is encouraged and instruction differentiated according to students’ individual needs and preferences.
