Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: Blueberries, Trains, Fiesta July 11-12

Summer is in full gear as Philadelphia families enjoy backyard barbecues, rounds of flashlight tag and weekend trips to the shore. Yet there is always more fun to be had during these carefree summer days. Delaware Valley residents can rely on the Mommy Poppins Event Calendar to keep the entire family entertained with unique and interesting activities.

Stop by Penn's Landing to celebrate Latino culture at the Hispanic Fiesta, visit Morris Arboretum to see Thomas the Tank Engine and his Sodor friends hit the railways or dance to the tunes of the Imagination Movers at Sesame Place. Or, check out one of the many blueberry events being held this weekend. Peddler's Village, Linvilla Orchards, Oasis Family Farm and Camden's Children's Garden all have festivals honoring this sweet summer fruit.

Kids Can Become S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents at the Marvel Experience, an Interactive Virtual Attraction

Unfortunately, on July 5 the company announced that The Marvel Experience tour has been suspended until further notice, so Philadelphia was its last stop. It will not be coming to NYC in August. It's hard to escape Marvel superheroes. With the Avengers movies, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show (and its Agent Carter spin-off) and real-world branded experiences like the Marvel Universe Live! arena show, chances are your kids (and you) know all about Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Coulson and all the other characters that make up this multifaceted and high-tech fictional universe. Now there's a new immersive attraction that invites audiences to become part of the action. At The Marvel Experience, you don't just watch these heroes, you join them as you're recruited to help save the world. My kids and I decided we were up to the challenge. Here's what we thought of our virtual Marvel adventure, plus important tips for families who plan to go.

Highland Orchards in Chester County: 5 Reasons to Make a Family Day Trip

Undoubtedly, the simplest of activities can often make the best memories for our young children. Visiting an area orchard or farm is an easy, low-cost outing and a great way to bring the little ones closer to nature. Highland Orchards, a Chester County farm market and pick-your-own field, provides fresh air, fresh food, and fun times for families all year round. During the warmer weather, families can take advantage of its outdoor activities, including pick-your-own strawberries, a playground, and a spot to feed animals. Fall is the height of apple picking and hayride season, and in the cold months, Highland Orchards continues its open hours in the farm market, where kids and grownups can enjoy the freshly baked pies and other baked goods (and other tasty free samples!)

This summer, don’t miss an opportunity to go to Highland Orchards for eating, playing, or even taking a structured tour of the grounds. Check out the top 5 reasons why it’s worth a drive to the Chester County countryside for a visit.

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: Flag Day and Nature Activities, June 13-14

Our nation celebrates Flag Day this Sunday. Since Philadelphia is the birthplace of our flag and its creator, Betsy Ross, it's fitting that we highlight Old Glory in our weekend post.

Throughout Historic Philadelphia, families can learn about the history of our country's flag. Festivities begin at the Betsy Ross House, where a 13-star flag is raised. Afterward, watch the Grand Parade as it marches from the National Constitution Center to Independence Hall, learn flag etiquette and enjoy a performance by the Spirit of Liberty Sky Diving Team.

In addition to flag fun, families can enjoy the outdoors in many ways this weekend. Have a Victorian-style picnic at Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, search for Awesome Amphibians at Upper Perkiomen Valley Park, examine trees in The Millennium Grove at Norristown Farm Park or watch the Brandywine Polo Club play a match.

Be sure to check out our Event Calendar and our June GoList for even more options. However you choose to spend your weekend, make it a memorable one!

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: Festivals, Carnivals & Fairs May 16-17

We are nearly halfway through May. (How did that happen?) With Mother's Day events behind us and the unofficial start of summer only 10 days away, perhaps this "middle of May" weekend can be spent sharing time together at one of the exciting events in our Event Calendar.

The South 9th Street Italian Market Festival is ready to entertain families with live music, its annual Procession of Saints Parade and delicious cuisine. Enjoy rides and games at Exton Square Mall's Carnival, or make crafts and play old-fashioned games at Craft-Phila-Liberty Bell Fair on Independence Mall.

If your family enjoys the outdoors, grab some sturdy shoes and get ready for a Family Hike at Armentrout, or play the day away at Venice Island Performing Arts & Recreation Center's PLAY Manayunk featuring a kids' run, kayaking, dragon boat racing and moonbouncing—enough to tire anyone out.

There are also two special events we want to highlight. Sponsored by the Girl Scouts, #GirlPOP2015 comes to the Pennsylvania Convention Center to inspire girls in kindergarten through 12th grade to make a difference in the world, while the Garden State Discovery Museum hosts Open Arms, a family evening where children on the autism spectrum can enjoy the institution.
