This Week, February Break Fun, Free Indoor Places to Go with NYC Kids, Last-Minute Midwinter Break Travel Deals

The Presidents' Day holiday weekend and midwinter break are the big to-dos across all of our sites. Here in NYC, we rounded up 30 things to do over February break and inexpensive but enriching vacation camps, plus our Winter Fun Guide is packed with lots of other awesome options. If you're looking to get away for a day or two, our regional sites have posts about the best things to do over break in New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester.

Does this never-ending winter have you dreaming of cozier (or at least less snowy) climes? Our Travel site has a list of last-minute midwinter break deals, including three in Florida that are looking pretty tempting right about now. That's assuming you can get a flight out, but perhaps the fantasy is enough to keep you warm.

If you find yourself stuck at home during part of the break, our fun and easy WeeWork projects are great boredom busters. In fact, if you do any of our WeeWork activities, snap a pic, share it on social media and you just may win tickets to Baby Loves Disco. Get all the details on our giveaway page.

Whatever you do over midwinter recess, we hope you have fun, and stay safe and warm! Here's what else we covered on the NYC site this week:

Weekend Fun for Boston Kids: Trains, Science, Magic and More Trains, Feb 15-16

February school vacation kicks off this weekend, and Boston offers plenty of ways to keep kids busy throughout the break. Options this weekend range from interactive readings of Kadir Nelson’s I Have a Dream picture book at Faneuil Hall to a model train show at the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation in Waltham.

National Engineers Week begins this week; check out the special events that will keep kids interested in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines. We’ve also highlighted over 30 museum events and special activities taking place throughout February School Vacation Week. And if you’re thinking about visiting Southie this weekend, take a look at Kristin's new post. Read on for things to do this weekend, and be sure to visit our events calendar for more ideas.

Our Wee Works projects continue to receive rave reviews - you can see the entire series here. If you’ve enjoyed the projects, why not sign up to get WeeWork activities delivered to your inbox?

Enjoy!

Science, Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Fun in Boston: National Engineers Week

We parents know it’s important for our kids to do well in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines, but how do we get them – and keep them – interested?  Start early, and make it fun! National Engineers Week, February 16-22, is a great place to start.  Read on for some wonderful programs happening in the Boston area during National Engineers Week, which (thankfully) coincides with February Vacation Week. If you want to continue stoking your child's interest during the summer, take a look at our post highlighting summer camp options for kids who love STEM

Find Inexpensive Gyms with Indoor Pools at NYC Schools

While there are plenty of NYC gyms that offer childcare, an annual membership just doesn't make sense for me. I don't need all the state-of-the-art bells and whistles (not to mention the high costs that come with them) when I just want to swim 20 (fine, 15) laps a few days a week before work. That's why I was thrilled when I discovered that the Trinity School on the Upper West Side allows the public to use its pool during off hours for about half of what membership costs at other local athletic facilities.

It turns out that the Trinity deal isn't unique. There are a number of private schools and colleges throughout New York City that offer gym and pool access to the public for less than what you usually pay at a fitness chain. Some even have kids' classes, too.

20 Things To Do With Kids In South Boston

Over the last 20 years, South Boston (“Southie”) has been the setting for a number of Hollywood blockbusters.  But with its uniquely Boston charm, proximity to downtown and beautiful beaches, many young families also call this bustling neighborhood home.  In fact, since moving here in 2009 I’ve lived here the longest I’ve lived anywhere in 15 years! The strong sense of community known as “Southie Pride” is apparent in every business and aspect of South Boston living. For this reason (and many others) I am delighted to show off the area.  So here are our favorite kid-friendly spots we love bringing our three-year-old daughter and our four-month-old son:

Mostly Free & Fun Things To Do With NJ Kids This Weekend Feb 15-16: Monster Jam, Super Science, Wizard of Oz & More!

It’s probably safe to say that most of us have had enough of the snow, the cold and, well – basically everything having to do with winter! It can be all too easy to sit inside and let the frigid temps get the best of you, but while we’re waiting (and wishing!) for that first sign of spring, why not keep busy with some engaging activities? As usual, Jersey delivers and we’ve got some great events going on in our state. Kick back and watch a performance, like The Secret Life of Hubie Hartzel at The Growing Stage or the always enchanting Wizard of Oz at SOPAC. We’re also in the middle of maple sugaring season so check out a demo at Tenafly Nature Center. And if the kids want to roll up their sleeves for some hands-on fun, head to Newark Museum to learn about The Science & Art of Sport. And remember, you can find a full list of weekend activities in our Event Calendar.
