Winter is proving to be an exciting time in Westchester with tons to do despite the freezing temperatures! This coming weekend in particular is full of entertainment and hands-on education.

With so many performances of various genres happening this weekend—it’ll be hard to choose! We've rounded up a magic show, plays, concerts and even a visual-arts performance dubbed Nyack Bodypainting Day. For even more upcoming shows, check out our roundup of kid-friendly performances happening through March.

Several compelling classes and workshops are also being offered this weekend, including Maker Day, NASA Ambassador David High and Intro to the Instruments, to name a few. The annual Toy and Train Show also returns to Westchester.

We've culled even more activities on our Event Calendar, plus find the month's highlights on our January GoList! Read on for details about this weekend's top picks.

Weekend Fun for NYC Kids: Free Winter Jam in Central Park, Inventgenuity Festival, Cool New Museum Exhibits & Shows January 24-25

Due to snow and sleet, the New York City Office of Emergency Management has issued a Travel Advisory through 6pm on Saturday. It looks like most of our weekend picks are going on as planned, but call ahead to be sure.

Three of our top family event picks of the month take place this weekend. Kids can get creative at Beam Center's Inventgenuity Festival, try snowy sports at Central Park's FREE Winter Jam and catch the New Victory Theater's latest show Lionboy.

There's also an awesome Off-Broadway ticket deal going on, a cool new exhibit at the Children's Museum of the Arts and a tot-rocking concert by They Might Be Giant's Danny Weinkauf at the Jewish Museum.

These are just a few of the great things going on this weekend. All of our picks are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Winter Fun Guide.

5 Mobile Spa Birthday Parties for Long Island Kids

No matter what her age, every girl loves a day of pampering. And it happens to be easier than ever to give your little princess the royal treatment for her special day--right in the comfort of your own home! Spa parties on-the-go are the latest birthday party trend sweeping Long Island. A traveling beauty parlor will transform your guests into glitzy and glamorous gals for the day, with everything from manis and pedis to getting their hair and makeup done. Here are five businesses that will come to your house to treat your daughter and her friends to a day (or an hour or so) of beauty.

Smoke and Mirrors: a Play with a Magic Show up Its Sleeve

Not every play that we bring kids to needs to be a children's show. Just last week I brought my son to see the legendary Angela Lansbury in Blithe Spirit (partly because Ahmanson Hot Tix are cheaper than a babysitter), and he giggled himself blue in the face. And when Cirque du Soleil comes to town, it ain't cheap but a whole family can love it together. Fairy tales, puppets, and sing-alongs definitely have their place, but it can be a wonderful thing to find a play that the entire family can enjoy on different levels. Such a show is Smoke and Mirrors at The Odyssey, in which a master magician tells his personal story and performs some top-notch magic along the way.
