Weekend Events for Kids on Long Island, January 8-10: Night Owl Prowl, Figure Skating Show, and More!

1/7/10 - By

How excited are you to have a Holiday-free weekend ahead? That is, unless you plan to spend the weekend stripping your home of Holiday decor. Maybe you're like me, and you figure you waited a whole year to put them up, let's leave them up "one more weekend." Whatever the case might be, take some time this weekend with your family checking out one of the following great events we've rounded up for you:

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

First of 2010 Owl Prowl
Friday, January 8, 7pm-9pm
Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary
134 Cove Rd, Oyster Bay

Got a night owl in your family (no pun intended)? Head up to Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary Friday night and take a nighttime nature walk in search of this nocturnal animal. There will be a presentation about owls starting at 7 and then you'll walk on a guided tour through the sanctuary. The Owl Prowl is also being held at Planting Fields Arboretum just down the road. The fee of $10 for non members is standard at either location. Call the Santucary at 516-922-3200 to reserve your spot or click here for information on the Planting Fields Prowl.

First Annual Figure Skating Performance
Friday, January 8, 6:15pm
Long Beach Indoor Ice Arena
150 West Bay Drive, Long Beach

If our post this week on places to ice skate on Long Island got you in the mood, check out this first annual "Holiday" show on ice down in Long Beach. Featuring local and national level competitive figure skaters, it is surely the ice skating event to get you set for next month's Olympics! But, the cost is a mere fraction of an Olympic ticket-it's just $2 per child and $5 for an adult! Visit the Long Beach Village site here, and download the information.

Model Railroad Exhibition and Open House
Saturday, January 9, 12pm-5pm
Central Operating Lines, Ltd
90F Raynor Ave, Ronkonkoma

Visit this train display if you or your child is a train enthusiast (or maybe someone got a new train from Santa!). Central Operating Lines, a New York State non for profit agency, is hosting this open house in a hanger just down the road from MacArthur Airport. See over 7 miles of track, display, and scenery. Sounds really cool! The fee is FREE. Click here for more info.

Wizard of Oz Family Event
Sunday, January 10
Huntington Cinema Arts Center
423 Park Avenue, Huntington

Got a Wizard of Oz enthusuast (or someone who loves wearing ruby shoes)? Visit this great local independent theater on Sunday for a showing of the film, and storytelling from Oz experts, like the daughter of the original Lion himself! Your kids can ask questions and see the new illustrative book which is written by John Fricke and Johnathan Shirshekan, who will also be on hand to sign it. For more information, call: 631-423-7611

Have a great weekend!
