During this spring family fair organized in conjunction with Illuminating Fashion: Dress in the Art of Medieval France and the Netherlands, Henry Chapin and his early music ensemble will lead families in traditional dances and songs enjoyed in France and England 500 years ago.

Children will try on costumes inspired by the books of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the Morgan collection, make their own wool chaperons and hats, and try their hand at fabric dyeing using centuries-old processes.

Come with your own homemade medieval costume.

May Music The Nottingham Fair Early Music Ensemble entertains families with period instruments and will lead children and adults in traditional European songs and dances.

Fashionistas Illuminated: The Costume Photo Shoot Children will become medieval fashionistas as they try on hand-made colorful costumes and create tableaux vivants in the style of the miniatures on display in the exhibit Illuminating Fashion. Digital photographs will be taken and sent to families by email.

Accessorize! Make a Hat Artist and educator Pam Koehler helps families sew and assemble trendy medieval headdresses for boys and girls. Then, they can go dancing.

A Bug, a Nut, and a Flower: The Must-Have Color Trend Scribe and Illuminator Karen Gorst shares medieval dyeing recipes with families. Participants will then dye their own cotton kerchiefs using a variety of natural substances.

Colors a la Cart In the Illuminating Fashion gallery families join educator Bel Mojica around our Color Cart and discover the medieval world of colors with a collection of dyed silk, cotton, and wool swatches, painted parchment samples, and an array of historical pigments, dyes, and their natural sources.
