Presidents Day: Cocoa with the Founders

Mon Feb 18, 2019
1:00pm to 4:00pm
All ages
Included with Museum Admission or Family Membership.

What drink was as important to the American colonies as coffee and tea? Why, cocoa, of course! At this cozy and tasty event, talk history with chocolate enthusiasts critical to America’s founding, including President George Washington, portrayed by Living Historian Michael Grillo; the first First Lady Martha Washington, portrayed by Sandy Winters of History at Play; Hercules, an enslaved chef at Mount Vernon, and Hercules’s wife, portrayed by New-York Historical Society Living History educators; and Ben Franklin, portrayed by Living Historian Jack Sherry.

In between sips of cocoa, visit hands-on stations to learn about chocolate’s journey to the American colonies, its role in the American Revolution, and its importance to the new nation. Sample chocolate ingredients and learn about chocolate-making, too!
