Explore the science of the creepy at this Halloween event. Learn how to use household materials to make fake blood or prosthetic wounds, learn how geometry and perspective are used in set design, and explore video and lighting effects.
Activities are free with general NYSCI admission and are available on both Saturday and Sunday, unless otherwise noted. This year’s activities include:
DIY Prosthetic Wounds: Noon – 4 pm
Museum visitors use a chocolatey recipe to create their own prosthetic wounds.
Fake Blood: Noon – 4 pm (Saturday only)
Visitors can make their own vial of fake blood to take home with them.
Spooky Stuffies – Noon – 4 pm
Participants learn the basics of hand sewing and make their own bat, pumpkin or ghost toy.
Costume Creations – Noon – 4 pm
No costume? No problem! Visitors can create their own costume using an array of tools and fun materials.
Spooky Sounds – Noon – 4 pm
Participants make their own instrument to create spooky sounds.
Dowels and Cobwebs – Noon – 4 pm
Visitors are challenged to build sculptures they can stand inside using wooden dowels, rubber bands and fake cobwebs.
Air Cannon Demonstration – Noon – 4 pm
NYSCI Explainers create vortexes using fog and an air cannon.
Tapetum Lucidum, A Live Painting Demonstration – Noon – 4 pm
Artist Shana Siegel will paint a 12-by-9 foot night landscape on velvet to demonstrate how painted theatrical backdrops are made.
Halloween Phases Demonstration – 3:30 pm
NYSCI Explainers demonstrate the phases of matter (with a Halloween twist.
Roommates – 10 am – 6 pm
This temporary art installation, created by scenic artist Shana Siegel, depicts two large fictional creatures based on the real-life symbiotic relationship of the goby fish and pistol shrimp.
